Luise (2023)
Luise is a 2023 German–French drama film directed by Matthias Luthardt. It is loosely inspired by a work of D. H. Lawrence and is set in Alsace during the final months of World War I. The film stars Luise Aschenbrenner, Christa Théret, and Leonard Kunz.
Set in autumn 1918, the story follows Luise, a 24‑year‑old German farmer living alone on a remote farm in Alsace, then part of Germany. Her solitary life changes when Hélène, a young French woman fleeing toward the Netherlands, seeks refuge in her home. Soon after, Hermann, a wounded German deserter, also arrives. The three form a tense and shifting triangle of affection, rivalry, and mistrust, shaped by the pressures of war and identity.
