quest of the year: watch 24 a24 movies in 2024
I was inspired by that post about treating a new years resolution as a fun quest, and figured I may as well document it! (i'm already 3 movies in but i'll update in real time moving forward). basically I made a list and am using a random number generator to pick each time so it's always a surprise!
uncut gems: whatever I thought this movie was going in it absolutely WAS NOT THAT, possibly the most stressful movie I've ever watched. insane that Sandler didn't get any Oscar noms for that performance (he did get a spirit award tho). it was very interesting to watch the movie lean so hard into the dishonest jewish merchant trope (and how much of how people treated him was earned), but I still couldn't help but root for him til the end.
locke: yayyyyy tom hardy! very fun to see him play a character that has his emotions locked tf DOWN as he intentionally spirals his life down the drain, but thank god it was only 90 minutes because there is only so long I can watch a man driving a car under the speed limit
minari: another movie that I thought was about something else completely going in lol, and I got to watch steven yeun! it took me 3 nights to get through this movie, NOT because it's bad, but because it's very quiet and I kept getting distracted. kinda depressing, kinda heartwarming, at the end of the day it's a good movie.
