Parallax Ping))) Ultrasonic Distance Sensor #28015
So I'll have to get back to the more complicated modules a little later because for First Spin, I should check out the 5 position switch and the Ping sensor! I actually thought that the Ping Sensor would be one of the more complicated items, but Roy has since corrected me.
Synopsis from the Parallax Kickstart Page: http://learn.parallax.com/KickStart/28015
So the Ping Sensor can measure distances using high frequency sound to detect objects within a range of 1in to 10ft. And it works because the Ping module sends a short high frequency tone (40kHz) and measures the amount of time it takes to detect the return echo. This represents the distance between the module and the objects in front of it. And with some basic math, you can convert the amount of delay of the echo to actual distance.
It's kinda handy actually, there are only three pins - Power (5V), Ground, and the Signal!
Note: Be sure to include 1 kΩ resistor when using a Parallax Propeller microcontroller.
Power requirements: +5 VDC
Communication: Positive TTL pulse
Dimensions: 0.81 x 1.8 x 0.6 in (22 x 46 x 16 mm)
Code: http://learn.parallax.com/sites/default/files/content/kickstart/code/Ping-PropellerSpin.zip
And when you run it:
As I move it around my desk, it gives me the distance of the objects in front of it in inches! It was super simple to get that started and going. I think I might try a project for it tomorrow! And normally I'd show a wiring diagram to the PropBoe, but because there are only three pins, I thought it'd be easy enough for most folks to figure out :p
