Twenty-Nine Thousand, Two Hundred
Relationship advice I heard recently mentioned that if your relationship didn’t work out, don’t worry, there are seven billion people on the planet. I think that the “another fish in the sea” mentality is misleading. Based on an 80 year lifespan, if you met a new person every day each day of your life from the day you were born until the day you died, you’d only have met 29,200 people. To meet all seven billion people, you would need to meet 239,726 people every day, or approximately 2.77 people every second from the moment you were born til the moment you died. If you only wanted to meet people of the opposite sex your numbers would be half these.
1 person per day * 365 days a year *80 years per lifetime = 29,200 people met per lifetime
7,000,000,000 people / (80 years per lifetime * 365 days a year) = 239,726 people per day
7,000,000,000 people / (80 years per lifetime * 365 days per year * 86,400 seconds per day) = 2.77 people per second
Using just the first number, (assuming you meet someone new every day of your entire life) and half of the opposite sex, you will only meet 14,600 potential soulmates. Of that number, half will be either “too old” or “too young” for your tastes. Of the remainder, 80% will happen to be sensory (visually or olfactory) unsatisfactory to you. Of the remainder, only 5% will be raised speaking the same language, or having the same morals, or being a psychologically compatible match. Meeting a new person every day your entire life will bring you into contact with just 73 people whom you could potentially spend the rest of your days making each other happy with. That’s less than one per year in an 80 year lifespan. Don’t throw the fish back just because its wet; you won’t catch many more.
14,600 people * 0.5 (half old/young) * 0.2 (sensory impression) * 0.05 (psychologically matched) = 73 people
I’m sorry but I just cracked myself up with that “Duly noted” thing.
Attention, Hollywood:
When anti-SJWs boycott movies (Fury Road and The Force Awakens), they become cultural icons.
When folks with intersectional politics (I...don’t actually know the collective noun for us) boycott movies (Pan, Aloha, Stonewall), they flop.
Just sayin’.
my insults: *hand-crafted artisanal delights used to accentuate the meat of my arguments and make my post more memorable*
my adversaries' insults: *literally just name-calling, usually including homophobic slurs, which are about as effective against a non-homophobic straight person as attempting to cut down a tree with a nerf gun*
me: *sigh* Some people just have no appreciation for the artistry of the craft.
