“I’m sure he just went out for food or something.”

“It’s been over half an hour, Dean.” Sam went outside, trying to listen for the unmistakable sound of his father coming home. But it was silent.

“Sammy, come inside, ok? Let’s just...let’s just get some sleep. He’ll be here when we wake up, I’m sure of it.” 

Dean made sure not to promise. He refused to promise anything until he knew for sure. He wasn’t gonna break Sam’s heart.

Sam nodded and padded back to the bed, led gently by Dean, closing the door behind him.

They climbed back into bed and Dean pulled his brother close, wrapping his arms around him from behind. Sam snuggled into his brother’s warm embrace, hoping that in the morning he would discover this was all just a dream.

Dad would be right there, wouldn’t he?

Dad hadn’t actually heard them and everything would go back to the way it was supposed to be. Right?

He let Dean’s soft hairline kisses and gentle fingers running through his hair put him to sleep.
