I am 100% African as it is the homeland, birthplace and dwelling of my ancestors, where majority of my family now still lives, where my Nigerian culture originates, the foundation of the WORLD. Africa is such a diverse continent that I am proud and will be forever proud to rep as it runs through my blood and is the reason why I got it tattooed. For me, I think that it's a little bit of both. There are times when I feel like I haven't assimilated enough into American culture due to my Haitian upbringing. Depending on the audience, it can go either way creating a complex to redefine yourself in the diaspora. I was born and raised in Jamaica West Indies. Although I am not directly from Africa, I can resonate with some of the values and traditions that remained in my Jamaican culture due to the slave trade. I would associate more with my African roots and traditions. Cultural transmission which were influenced via folklore has certainly influenced my perspectives, values and belief system that are not necessarily congruent with my American colleagues. In essence, I would say I am too African to be American but I am not limited to realm of my Jamaican or african subculture. #AmI #RDxAmI #2AF2AM #cornelluniversity #jamaican

I would say that I fit into my society. Nevertheless, I very much identify with some of the experiences of any American born African American and as such, I am not too African to be American. However, I cannot fully claim to understand what it is like growing up black in America - growing up, rarely was I conscious of my skin color. I don't think I'm either. It used to be one or the other depending on whichever country I was living in at the time. With all the moving and the constant change, I realised I had to be the constant, and keep myself grounded.
