Sooo season 2 returns today...
:D
Hey! Just doing a quick Apritello drabble... Takes place a week or so after wormquake! Rating: G It hadn't rained in New York for some time now. The clouds swelled and turned a darker-than-just-pollution grey in the misty sky. The air was heavy and if you went outside, you could smell the water in the air. The rain was to be welcomed by all of us, I think. Mikey has been complaining that there hasn't been a muddy puddle romp in months. Leo goes along with Splinter in the fact that its a spiritual thing: a time to cleanse. Raph and Casey want to dress up as bog monsters and terrorize the citizens of New York. (I feel bad for anyone that will get caught in that smelly mess.) April... she just wants it to rain. I think that she believes the sun has been out too long and we all just need a storm to calm us. Me, well... It's scientific, of course. Without the rain, the plants won't keep living, and without the weeds I pick up, I can't continue testing retro mutagen on flora. I could start a garden, but every plant I try to grow myself dies. So when the downpour started, naturally everyone went rushing topside. Truthfully, I almost missed it. "C'mon Donnie! Get out here!" "In a minute, Mikey.. I'm... I'm working on something!" "But dude... IT'S RAININ'!" That was enough, even for me. I pulled off my goggles and stashed the batch of mutagen I was working on in a new cabinet, then grabbed my bo staff and darted out the door. I heard laughter down the sewer tunnels, and Master Splinter was the only one waiting for me. "Donatello. You deserve a break from all your hard work. Go have fun with your family." He smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling. I nodded and bowed, eager to catch up to my brothers, April, and Casey. I darted to the nearest exit to the sewers and scaled the buildings around me, searching the doused city for the others. Of course, it didn't take me long to locate two mutant turtles, a human, and a few bog monsters amongst the grey bricks. I caught up fairly quickly to the group and landed in a puddle beside Mikey and Leo, dousing them in a layer of rain water. Leo rolled his eyes, while Mikey smiled and splashed me back. "Soo... Who are the two piles of wet grass and sewage? Or do I even Have to ask?" I snorted. Leo ran a hand over his face, shaking his head. "Raphael and Casey. They decided they would give the New Yorkers some 'excitement.'" Leo scoffed at the pair's retreating backs, which disappeared down the fire escape. April snickered as one of them jumped off at the bottom stair and nearly gave someone a heart attack. One look and they ran away screaming. "This city's had enough excitement without those two goons creating myths about 'bog creatures.'" I muttered affectionately. It was pretty funny, even if it was kind of dumb. April nodded and grinned down at the coal colored streets below. "Yeah.. They're just having fun." Mikey suddenly gasped. "Guys, look! LOOK AT THAT PUDDLE!" He pointed frantically at the closest thing to a lake we would ever get in the streets of New York. Across from us sat a gargantuan, and frankly disgusting, puddle that was almost covering the roof of a flat building. Mikey went flying off, leaping across the rooftops until we saw him leap to the puddle. A fountain of water sprayed up where he landed, and even from here we could hear his wild laughter. Leo shook his head and smiled, his blue eyes clearer in the rain then I've ever seen them. He looked happier. Knowing what happened with The Shredder, Karai and all a week ago... Well, I'm not surprised that he's having a tough time. We all did, those first few days. The shock, and feeling sorry for Splinter was quite difficult to wrap our heads around. Leo hadn't left us to be alone, though. He stayed and supported Splinter. Raphael was mad that he did not explain earlier, but Leo stood up for Splinter. Despite what happened with Karai, even before this, Raph suspected that Leo never really lost feelings for Karai. At first I couldn't see it, but now I'd be the first to agree. I placed a hand on Leonardo's shoulder. "Leo, if you need some alone time... April and I will watch out for Mikey, don't worry." The shorter mutant looked at me gratefully, and nodded once, stiffly, before bounding away. Soon, he disappeared into the rain-washed melancholy world. I was alone with April. Honestly, it was a bit exciting. I didn't get much alone time with her anymore. We were either fighting aliens together or running for our lives, or Casey was with us. Plus, her and Casey had been spending more and more time together. As a result, I spent more and more time in my lab. By this time I had accepted that she had probably chosen Jones over me, and only wanted to be friends. I tried not to take it personally. After all, I am a mutant turtle. And she's an incredibly beautiful human girl. Well.. Almost human, technically, but that's besides the point. I glanced over at her. April leaned on the edge of the building, her arms crossed. She wasn't wearing a rain jacket, so she was getting completely soaking wet. Her bangs hung around her face, slightly curly from the humidity in the air. April looked gorgeous, to me. I wanted to say something, but I had no idea what I could possibly say. 'So.. You and Casey..?' 'Guess what I figured out about mutagen and chloride the other day...' 'Your hair looks beautiful when it's curly.' 'Man, we haven't hung out in forever..' They were all stupid. But I couldn't just sit here and say nothing. It was wasting precious minutes, and since I wasn't close to creating a device that could successfully time travel, I didn't have much to waste on silence. Except, it was a nice silence. The kind that isn't awkward. The kind where you're just happy standing beside someone you care about. Finally, I worked up the courage to break the silence. "You're awesome at riding giant alien worms, you know." I blurted. April laughed. She laughed so hard she clutched her stomach and had to sit down. Tears of mirth ran down her cheeks and mingled with the rain. "Oh god Donnie.. That was the funniest thing I've heard all week." She shook her head, a grin still plastered across her face. April then looked up at me and patted the spot beside her. Absentmindedly I wondered if Mikey was still preoccupied with the puddle. I bent my knees and slid myself into a sitting position slowly. April let out a puff of air, that we could oddly see in the rain. I'd have to do research on that later. April tilted her head back and stared up at the dark clouds, closing her eyes and letting the rain wash over her face. She looked like she was crying, the way the rain hit her cheeks. I reached up without thinking and brushed a droplet of water away, causing her to open her eyes and look at me. "How are you, Donnie?" I smiled at her. "I'm good, April. And yourself?" "Couldn't be better. And the rain.. It's finally raining." "Yeah.. Oh, April. I have something.. Ah.. For you." I pulled a small trinket out of one of the wraps on my hands, where I'd kept it for a while. It was roughly the size of a dime, so I'd almost forgotten it was there. The trinket was a tiny stone I had carved into a turtle, as detailed and as perfect as I could make it. I painted five sections on the shell; a blue one for Leo, a red one for Raph, an orange one for Mikey, a purple one for myself, and a black one for Casey. I had attached a little chain to it. It was meant for a keychain. "I.. I was thinking about how close we all came to.. To dying, you know?" I stuttered as I handed it to her. "So I made this to keep.. K-keep us all close to you." She turned the petite turtle over and over in her hands, her fingers gently running over the curves in the polished stone. Eventually she clipped it onto her phone and smiled at me, turning sideways to face me. A smile lit her features. "Donnie, it's great.. I love it so much. But don't worry.. None of us will die. And I always keep you close, all of you. In here." She laid a hand over her heart. "I know that sounds cheesy, but it's true." "I believe you. Even if it is a little cheesy." I teased her. She laughed and punched my arm playfully. April then did something I wouldn't have expected. She scooted closer to me and leaned on my shoulder, laying her head down comfortably. She let out a happy sigh and pulled her knees up to her chest, slipping her hand into mine. I smiled up at the clouds, and silently thanked the world. This one moment was special and important to me, even if it was fleeting. Soon Raph and Casey would return, and probably Mikey before that. Then Leo, and I'd go back to being the smart geek of the gang. I didn't mind too much, though. At least I got this chance. At least I have this moment to remember.
If they can make this face, they can kiss just fine. ;'D
