part 1
“what?” jonghyun asks, reaching out across the gap between their beds to poke key with his foot.
“what?” key looks up from their phone, blinking at jonghyun in confusion.
“what do you mean ‘what’?” jonghyun rolls his eyes. “you were just grinning at your phone, it must be something?”
“oh,” key bites their lip, cursing their inability to hide their emotions and jonghyun’s ability to read them like a book. they hadn’t even realised they were smiling. “it’s nothing.”
“oh, come on kibum,” jonghyun snorts, jabbing key’s leg again with his foot. “it’s obviously something.”
“what’s going on?” minho asks, bustling into the room and looking between the two of them, eyes narrowed in suspicion. key groans: now that minho’s involved there’s no way they’re getting out of this. all they’d wanted was to chill after a long day of tour rehearsals, they don’t need this shit right now.
“kibummie’s got a crush,” jonghyun says simply, looking pointedly at key.
“oooh!” minho gasps, clapping his hands together in glee and sitting down at the foot of key’s bed. “who is it?”
“fuck off,” key whines, slapping minho’s hands away as he tries to grab their phone. “I don’t have a crush.”
“they were deadass blushing at their phone just now,” jonghyun fake gags. “like a fucking high-schooler.”
“it’s a crush, kibum,” minho deadpans. “come on, just tell us who it is. you know we’re gonna find out eventually anyway.”
“I hate you,” key pouts. “fine, it’s someone I met at that gucci launch party I went to the other week. his name’s kibum.”
“you’re dating someone called kibum,” minho states, scoffing incredulously.
“we’re not dating, jesus fucking christ minho,” key throws their hands up in exasperation.
“alright alright, I’m sorry,” minho pats key’s leg. “tell us about him then?”
“okay, um,” key picks at a loose thread at the hem of their sweater. “he’s a model and he’s really tall and handsome and he’s like, really, really similar to me and we hit off really well at the party and we’ve been texting non-stop and I’m like, lowkey in love with him already.”
“I knew it,” jonghyun mutters. “what is it with you and models?”
“it’s not my fault they’re hot,” key huffs, crossing their arms.
“sounds great,” minho grins. “how old is he?”
“shit, I haven’t asked yet,” key picks up their phone, smiling at kibum’s reply to their previous message before typing out the question.
“what the fuck,” they say once the answer comes, dropping their phone and running a hand through their hair.
“what?” jonghyun and minho both lean forward in unison.
“he’s twenty,” key closes their eyes. “’95 line. holy shit, he’s practically a child.”
“he’s literally not a child, kibum,” minho shakes his head. “four years is nothing.”
“four years is everything!” key exclaims. “I wouldn’t wanna date twenty year-old me, jesus. I was awful at twenty.”
“he’s not you though, is he,” minho’s got his Mr. Reasonable voice on.
“you’ve said you’d date someone five years younger than you before,” jonghyun points out.
“when did I say that?” key squints at him.
“in like, every interview ever,” jonghyun shrugs.
“oh yeah, right, and tae said they’d date fucking emma watson,” key snorts.
“the point is,” minho shifts up the bed to sit closer to key. “you get on really well with him regardless of his age, so what should it matter?”
“I guess,” key sighs. “but what if he doesn’t wanna date me because I’m old?”
“then he’s probably not worth your time,” minho says, resting a reassuring hand on key’s knee.
key sighs, picking up their phone and replying to kibum’s message, whining about their age difference. when his reply comes, it’s just a message saying ‘I don’t mind’ followed by a row of heart emojis. key squeaks, blushing and rolling over to bury their face in the bedding.
“holy shit,” jonghyun whispers. “this is bad.”
“this is fantastic,” minho grins.

they continue to text back and forth at every available opportunity and key finds themself feeling happier and more content than they have done in a long time. their good mood is contagious - not even the strain of hours of overseas concert rehearsals dampening the high spirits among the five of them. they laugh their way through one final round of practicing, collapsing breathlessly as they complete the last song, shouting thanks and congratulations to each other and the staff.
the next day, they finally head back to korea and key pulls out their phone as soon as they get into the terminal, sending kibum a text asking if they can phone him. he replies quickly and simply, just a ‘yes’ and a little smiley emoji.
“hello?” kibum mumbles when he answers, sounding a little shy and uncertain.
“hey,” key smiles, waving to the crowds of fans waiting in the main section of the airport. “we just landed, are you busy right now?”
“uh, no, I’m free for the rest of the day,” kibum replies and key gulps: this is their first time hearing kibum’s voice since they met and they’d forgotten quite how deep and rich the tone of it was.
“okay, do you, um,” key falters, surprised at how nervous they are. “do you want to come over?”
“oh, yeah, sure,” kibum sounds just as nervous. “if that’s okay? you must be tired.”
“of course it is,” key’s smile widens. “um, but I have to pick up my puppies first, do you want to meet me there?”
“okay,” kibum agrees easily.
“I’ll text you the address,” key says. “it’s not that far from you.”
“awesome,” key can hear the smile in kibum’s voice. “see you in a bit then.”
“yeah, see you,” key grins as they hang up. they cover their face with their hand as they pass the crowds of fans greeting them, well aware that they’re probably blushing: like a high-schooler, as jonghyun would say.
“I’m so glad you’re happy,” jinki says softly, appearing at key’s side and squeezing their arm gently. key smiles gratefully at him: they’re always appreciative of jinki’s quiet support.
they make their way quickly through the airport, clambering into the van and dropping jonghyun and tae off at their parents’ houses and then key at their apartment before disappearing off towards the dorm with jinki and minho. the two wish key good luck as they get out, minho flashing some obscene hand gestures at them as they close the door.
they head straight for the car park of their building, muttering to themself as they wander round in search of their car, wondering how it is that they manage to lose it every single time. they finally find it after a few minutes, slinging their suitcase into the boot before getting in and starting the engine. it only takes a few minutes to drive to the puppy centre and soon they’re standing outside, shifting their weight anxiously from foot to foot while they wait for kibum. they check their phone: not sure if he should text him to ask where he is or not, but just as they’re typing out a text, kibum appears around the corner, face lighting up as he spots key.
“hey!” they call once he gets closer, taking in kibum’s appearance. his outfit is simple: light wash skinny jeans and a loose navy sweater, but the clothes fit him so well that he looks gorgeous and key can’t help but envy his figure.
“hi,” kibum sounds a little breathless. “you look great, wow.”
“I was just thinking the same of you,” key bites their lip as they look up at kibum. his voice sounds even deeper in person and it's really fucking attractive.
“thanks,” kibum blushes, fiddling awkwardly with one of his rings. “how was your flight?”
“it was fine,” key shrugs, leading the way into the building. “it’s just routine now, really.”
“I don’t know how you do it,” kibum shakes his head with a grimace. “I hate flying.”
“I used to,” key smiles sympathetically.
“when you were my age?” kibum teases.
“shut up,” key shoots a look over their shoulder. “I’m not that old.”
“I know, I’m kidding,” kibum chuckles his bubbly laugh. they walk through the reception area, bowing politely to the girl behind the desk.
“I just recently started using this place,” key tells kibum as they emerge into a bright room, dog toys and accessories stacked neatly on every surface. dogs are dotted here and there around the room, some playing around with each other, others napping in trainers’ laps. “the one I used before was a nightmare, the dogs really hated it.”
“did they treat them badly?” kibum asks, bending to pet a dog that comes up to sniff curiously at his leg.
“I dunno, it just didn’t seem like a nice atmosphere,” key shrugs. “the people here are so nice and the dogs are much more relaxed.”
“that’s great,” kibum smiles, straightening up again as the dog trots away. “so which ones are yours?”
“they usually come over as soon as I arrive,” key pouts. “they’re probably outside.”
they cross the room, stepping carefully over the excited pups and out into the little garden area at the back of the building. key’s dogs spot them immediately, dropping the toy they’re fighting over and bounding towards them, yipping happily and jumping up to paw at key’s legs.
“hey guys,” key laughs, squatting and scooping them both up in their arms, pressing kisses to their fluffy heads. “I missed you so much.”
kibum hovers next to them, tentatively reaching out to stroke comme des’ back, smiling fondly as key fusses over the dogs, muttering to them in gibberish and nuzzling their face into their fur.
“this is kibum,” key turns so the dogs are facing kibum. “say hi!”
“hello,” kibum giggles into his hand, letting the dogs sniff him out.
“this is comme des and this is garçons,” key kisses each of them in turn. “I think they like you.”
“I’m glad,” kibum is grinning from ear to ear. they smile at each other for a moment: key getting caught up in how cute he is with the way his smile lights up his whole face, his mouth curving cutely and his eyes scrunching up.
“uh, I should go sign them out,” key clears their throat when the pups squirm in their arms, bringing them back to earth.
“okay,” kibum says, still smiling.
they sign the pups out, the owner appearing just as they’re about to leave and making key pose for a photo, bragging about how she’s just opened a new instagram account. they bow formally, eventually managing to leave with the dogs.
key drives back to their place, leaving kibum in charge of making sure the dogs don’t jump through into the front of the car. they’re well trained, but comme des’ curiosity often gets the better of him and key doesn’t want to risk anything. they glance over at kibum, doing a double take when they catch him staring at them.
“what?” they ask, looking back at the road, feeling heat rising in their face at kibum’s scrutiny.
“nothing,” kibum says, turning away and bringing a hand up to cover his mouth.
“tell me,” key whines, reaching out to slap kibum’s arm playfully.
“no it’s just,” kibum mumbles, voice shy and quiet. “you look really hot when you’re driving.”
“is that a kink?” key raises one eyebrow at him.
“fuck off,” kibum buries his face in his hands, making little embarrassed noises.
“you’re so cute,” key coos, turning off into the car park for their building.
they park, key giving the dogs to kibum and heaving their bags out of the car. they head for the lift and make their way up to key’s apartment, the dogs skittering excitedly across the tarmac, just as eager to get home as key is.
“this is me,” key dumps their bags outside their door and pulls their keys out of their pocket. “I hope it’s not too messy.”
“it’s fine,” kibum assures them. “it can’t be worse than my place.”
key lugs their bags into the apartment, letting the dogs off their leashes and stepping out of their shoes. kibum follows suit, hovering awkwardly beside key.
“do you want a drink or anything?” key offers, leading him into the apartment.
“I’m alright thanks,” kibum declines and key laughs: he’s practically radiating nervousness.
“let me just change,” key says, tugging their bags down the corridor towards their room. “make yourself at home, play with the dogs or something.”
they watch as kibum nods, perching on the edge of the sofa and picking up a toy to wave in front of garçons’ nose. they smile, closing their bedroom door behind them. they leave their suitcase by the wardrobe to unpack later, dumping their bag on the bed and shrugging off their jacket, carefully hanging up their clothes. they pull on some sweats and a t-shirt in the hopes that dressing down will make kibum feel a little more comfortable.
they head back out into the living room, slumping down onto the sofa next to kibum and slinging an arm over their face. garçons hops up onto the sofa and settles down next to key, head resting on their hip.
“I’m so fucking tired,” they groan. “constantly going back and forth to japan is so draining.”
“I can leave if you want to sleep or something?” kibum asks, shifting so he’s facing key at the other end of the sofa. key peeks out from under their arm: kibum’s eyebrows are furrowed in a concerned little frown, his lips pushed out in a pout, and he looks fucking adorable.
“no, I wanted to see you,” key reassures him. “I wouldn’t have invited you if I didn’t want you here.”
“okay,” kibum pouts even more and key kind of really wants to kiss him.
“do you want to watch a film?” key asks, shaking the thought out of their head. “and then we can get something to eat later, if you want.”
“yeah, okay,” kibum nods.
“you can pick,” key points at their dvd collection in the cabinet under their television. “or we can look for one online if you don’t fancy any of those.”
kibum slides off the sofa, crawling forwards and lying on his stomach to inspect the collection of dvds. comme des sees it as an opportunity: trotting over and sitting on kibum’s butt with what looks like a triumphant expression. they both crack up, key quickly taking a photo before kibum can object.
“you sure like disney, huh?” kibum comments once he catches his breath.
“yeah,” key hums. they have all their favourites on dvd, plus a bunch of others that were either impulse purchases or gifts from people. “it’s kind of a thing.”
“a thing?” kibum asks, rolling over to look at key, careful not to squish comme des as he hops off his butt.
“an interest,” key shrugs. “I guess you could call it an obsession.”
“hm,” kibum nods. “obsession kinda makes it sound like a bad thing.”
“yeah,” key agrees. “I’m kind of an obsessive person, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing for the most part.”
“what other ‘obsessions’ do you have?” kibum sits up, doing air quotes with his hands around the word obsessions. key smiles, suddenly feeling a wave of admiration and appreciation for the way kibum understands them.
“I collect a lot of things,” they admit. “at the moment it’s mostly scented candles and a few other things. and whenever I start a new project or get a new interest I get like, obsessed with it and I can’t really think about anything else.”
“yeah,” kibum hums. “I kinda picked up on that from just talking to you.”
“mm,” key smiles. “people say I’m a perfectionist but I feel like that word kind of has negative connotations as well.”
“that’s true,” kibum nods thoughtfully before turning to look at the dvds again.
“I haven’t seen this,” he eventually pulls out ‘maleficent’. “is it good?”
“that’s one of my favourites,” key nods.
“okay, let’s watch this one then,” kibum clicks open the case, carefully getting the disc out and prodding at the buttons on the dvd player until the drawer pops out. once he’s set it up, he scrambles back to sit on the sofa next to key, a little closer this time.
key gets comfy as the film starts, propping their feet up on the coffee table in front of the sofa. they’ve seen this film so many times they can practically quote the entire thing: muttering lines of dialogue to themself along with the characters.
they startle when their phone vibrates in their pocket, suddenly realising they must have been asleep. the sun is starting to set, casting a reddish light across the wooden floor.
“shit,” they rub their eyes. “I fell asleep.”
“I noticed,” kibum smiles. “it’s okay, you need the rest.”
key hums, squinting at their phone. it’s a text from minho: ‘are you two making out yet?’ with a bunch of smirking emojis. they scoff, replying with a middle finger emoji, switching their phone to silent and putting it out of reach.
“what is it?” kibum asks curiously.
“nothing, just my group mates being annoying,” key shakes their head. kibum raises an eyebrow but doesn’t press it, focusing back on the film. key looks at the tv: frowning when they see it’s nearing the final scenes – they slept through almost the entire thing.
when the film ends, they look over at kibum to judge his reaction. his eyes are wide, mouth slightly open.
“holy shit,” he says, turning to look at key. “that was amazing.”
“I know,” key smiles. “there’s a reason it’s one of my favourites.”
“the way they referenced everything to sleeping beauty,” kibum looks stunned. “like, it makes you think twice about villains and stuff.”
“yeah,” key nods, gazing at kibum, heart swelling at his reaction. they discuss the film for a while, key getting a little carried away once they start monologuing, kibum listening intently and adding his thoughts here and there.
“did you wanna get food?” key asks when kibum’s stomach grumbles quietly. “I was thinking pizza.”
“yeah, I’m pretty hungry actually,” kibum admits. “pizza sounds good.”
they order pizzas, key clearing a space at their table by the window overlooking the city. they sit quietly, eating with their hands while the dogs curl up at their feet.
“this is such a nice view,” kibum comments, waving a hand at the window. it’s dark now, but the bright city sends a dim cloud of light up into the sky.
“yeah, I love it,” key looks out, watching the flow of traffic. “I sit here a lot; it makes me feel really peaceful.”
“how long have you lived here?” kibum asks, leaning over to pick out another slice of pizza from the box between them.
“I moved in just over a year ago,” key tells him.
“don’t you get lonely?” kibum asks.
“yeah, I do a lot,” key admits. “it’s nice sometimes I guess, but I’m not really used to being on my own especially after living with the others for like ten years.”
“mm,” kibum hums.
“who do you live with?” key asks.
“I have a dorm with some other models from our company,” kibum tells them. “the conditions aren’t bad, especially compared to what I’ve heard of some idol groups.”
“yeah,” key smiles. “we used to live in a one-room dorm, all five of us.”
“holy shit,” kibum’s eyes widen. “what was that like?”
“it wasn’t actually that bad,” key shrugs. “I mean we fought a lot over like, bathroom time and stuff, and tae is the messiest fucking person on the planet, but it was mostly okay. I’ve heard of worse.”
“makes you wonder,” kibum chews slowly.
“what do you mean?” key tilts their head inquisitively.
“like, all these kids just wanna be idols,” kibum frowns. “all the training and work and shitty conditions, do you think it’s worth it?”
“for me, definitely,” key nods. “there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing right now. I knew I wanted to be a performer since I was like, two years old, I don’t think anything could have kept me away.”
“I guess,” kibum nods. “I mean I don’t know what it’s like so I can’t really comment.”
“yeah,” key shrugs. “obviously I was lucky enough to be successful so I can’t speak for others who weren’t so lucky.”
“I don’t think it’s all down to luck,” kibum smiles shyly. “I’ve seen you performing, that’s not luck.”
“you have?” key raises an eyebrow.
“yeah,” kibum bites his lip. “I might have looked up a few videos the day we met.”
“seriously?” key grins. “what did you watch?”
“just a couple of recent videos,” kibum’s blushing hard. “you’re really amazing.”
“thank you,” key says earnestly. “I actually tried looking you up but there’s like, literally nothing about you online.”
“yeah, our company is a bit funny about that,” kibum purses his lips. “I don’t have any photos on me but I’ll send you some if I can.”
“I’ll hold you to that,” key winks, making kibum blush even more.
“I guess I should get going,” kibum sighs, checking the time on his phone. “it’s getting late.”
“yeah, it is,” key agrees, standing up and collecting all the pizza stuff from the table to carry into the kitchen. “do you have schedules tomorrow?”
“yeah I have a fitting and a bunch of meetings,” kibum fakes a yawn and key chuckles. “fun stuff. what about you?”
“I’ve got my play in the evening,” key says. “so I’m just rehearsing for that all day.”
“you’re in a play?” kibum asks, raising his eyebrows.
“yeah, it’s just a tiny thing,” key shrugs. “it’s really good fun though, you should come along some day.”
“I’d love to,” kibum nods eagerly. “I didn’t know you acted, wow.”
“I started in 2012,” key smiles at kibum’s enthusiasm. “I’ve only done musicals before, but the director of my last musical offered me a role in this play and it’s a film I really love so I wanted to take it.”
“cool,” kibum looks impressed. “you’re like, a really impressive person, I hope you’re aware of that.”
“I’m not really,” key pouts. “I just work really hard.”
“hm,” kibum narrows his eyes. “not everyone can do that, though.”
“do you want me to drop you home?” key offers, changing the subject.
“no it’s okay, I’ll get a taxi,” kibum shakes his head. “it’s fine, really.”
“if you’re sure,” key frowns.
“yeah, I don’t wanna put you out any more,” kibum shrugs. “I had a really nice time though, thank you.”
“I did too,” key grins. “I really like hanging out with you.”
“me too,” kibum’s smile spreads across his face. key walks kibum to the door, leaning against the wall and watching him slip his shoes on.
“I’ll see you soon then,” kibum asks hesitantly, hovering in the doorway.
“yeah,” key laughs, covering their mouth with their hand. kibum bends to pat the dogs’ heads, saying bye to each of them in turn.
“bye kibum,” kibum grins when he straightens up again.
“bye, kibum,” key grins back, watching him walk down the corridor towards the lift, holding the dogs back with their foot. they close the door once kibum disappears, leaning back against the wall and smiling so wide it feels like their face might split in two.
they run through the apartment, diving onto the sofa and grabbing their phone, dialling minho’s number. they need to tell him all about this.
WHAT A PARTY; key/kibum
1568 words, PG, kibum² aka bumbum aka key and model kibum bc they’re cute as heck together. also this
key taps their champagne flute against their lower lip, staring into space and humming in what they hope is obvious disinterest as the guy chatting them up leans in even closer, hot champagne breath sending a shudder down key’s spine. they wish hyosup had warned them that this party would be like, 80% gross cis men; they could’ve spent all evening writing their thesis, or practicing their lines, or doing literally anything that would have been more productive than this. but alas: here they are, trying to edge slowly away from this weird ass guy who can’t seem to take a hint.
“can i get a pic of you two?” a woman appears with a camera, flapping a hand and gesturing for them to move closer together. key rolls their eyes, but fixes their posture anyway, standing up straight and forcing themself not to grimace as the guy wraps an arm around their waist. they look fucking good tonight and they’re not gonna let it go to waste, even if it means taking photos with creepy strangers.
“send that to me!” the guy grins, peering over the woman’s shoulder to get a look at the photo.
“alright, and one of just key,” the woman requests, and key snorts as the guy’s ego visibly deflates and he steps away with a disgruntled expression. key poses, leaning back against the wall and cocking their hip, tilting their head a little to get the best angle.
“perfect!” the woman grins, giving them a thumbs up and then turning to talk to the guy. key uses the moment of distraction to slip away, disappearing into the crowd and pulling out their phone, sipping their champagne as they click through a few apps and send a bunch of whiny messages to the members’ group chat. they get a few replies, but it’s only minho telling them to get laid and then jonghyun telling minho to stop being embarrassing. they shake their head fondly, watching the two bicker back and forth until jinki steps in and tells them to shut up.
they glance up when a figure appears next to them, smiling politely and almost turning away again before something about the person’s face catches their interest. they look familiar somehow, though key’s pretty sure they’ve never met before. they’re a few inches taller than key, their hair dark and their features sharp but with a certain softness to them and key finds themself unable to look away.
“hi,” their voice is deep and smooth and it sends a shiver down key’s spine.
“hey,” key smiles, then frowns and tilts their head in question. “have we met before?”
“i don’t think so,” the person shrugs, looking around to check no one’s watching before leaning a little closer, tongue caught between their teeth in a smirk. “i think i’d remember if we had.”
key opens their mouth, then closes it again, lifting a hand to cover the blush they can feel spreading across their cheeks. from here, they can see how long the stranger’s eyelashes are and how they cast pretty shadows on their high cheekbones.
“i’m kibum,” they offer a hand, leaning away again and putting a more reasonable distance between their faces.
“seriously?” key asks as they shake kibum’s hand. the hand is warm and large, strong fingers curling around key’s palm. “i’m kibum too.”
“wow, what a coincidence,” kibum grins. “well, i guess it’s not exactly a rare name.”
“yeah, true,” key shrugs. they’ve known at least five other kibums in their lifetime. “most people around here call me key, though. and, uh, i prefer they pronouns, but no one at this shitty party seems to want to respect that.”
“key, okay,” kibum’s still grinning and key can’t help but smile back. “just he pronouns for me. it’s not exactly a choice turnout, is it?”
“yeah, usually fashion people are great and like, queer as fuck, but this is just,” they wave a hand at the crowd, pulling an ugly face to describe their feelings towards the people gathered. kibum scoffs in agreement, watching the photographer from earlier take photos of someone key thinks they recognise from a rookie group.
the two quickly get talking: it turns out kibum is decidedly less cool and collected than his original chat-up line made him out to be and he feels equally as lost at this party as key does. they seem to have a lot in common and key feels excitement bubbling as they begin to get to know each other, making sure to take note of all the important things kibum tells them about himself. he has a cute, giggly laugh that comes as easily as breathing; he cracks up as key tells him in detail about the creepy guy from earlier, shoving key’s shoulder playfully and almost spilling their champagne. they talk about their respective fields of work, discussing fashion and trends, striking upon another common interest when kibum starts talking about his brand new puppy, his eyes bright and animated, hands gesturing wildly. key grins as he talks: it’s almost like watching themself in a mirror with how similar kibum is to them.
“oh shit,” kibum says suddenly, breaking off mid-sentence and looking at his watch. “i’m supposed to be starting my dj set, thirty seconds.”
“oh, okay?” key blinks: they’d almost forgotten where they were with how engrossed they’d become in talking.
“come watch?” kibum smiles, fluttering his eyelashes a little bit and doing that thing with his tongue again. key’s heart skips a beat: they swallow thickly and nod, following kibum through the crowd.
they reach a dj desk at the back of the busy room, kibum nodding to the person just ending their set and getting his own stuff ready. key leans against the wall to the side, observing kibum with interest as he sets up. he doesn’t quite look at ease and key guesses he’s pretty new at this, but the record soon switches seamlessly, building into something more upbeat. key bobs their head to the rhythm, swallowing what’s left of their champagne and watching the people around them begin to move as the new song takes off. key looks back at kibum, catching him staring at them with a tiny smile, though he quickly looks back down with flushed cheeks when key meets his eyes. key grins, letting the music take control, swaying their hips and moving easily with the beat. soon everyone is dancing, key quickly pushing away anyone who tries to come onto them, focusing on the way kibum’s eyes trace over their body. they run a hand gratuitously over their chest, biting their lip and smirking when kibum’s jaw drops.
they lose track of time: before they know it kibum's set is over and he’s thanking the audience to enthusiastic applause before stepping down and heading straight over to key.
“you look amazing,” kibum murmurs, pressing up close behind key. his voice is even deeper than it was before and key shivers, leaning back into kibum’s warmth. they dance together for a while, key leading and kibum clumsily following their movements. it’s endearing, the way kibum doesn’t seem to know quite what to do with his limbs.
“i should get going,” kibum mumbles after a while. key looks around, noticing that the crowd is starting to thin out somewhat. it must be getting pretty late.
“okay,” key turns, looking up at kibum. “let me get my bag.”
they say goodbye to a couple of people, thanking the host and taking a few more photos with various guests before heading down the stairs together, shivering as they step out into the cool night air.
“where are you headed?” key asks.
“i live just around the corner,” kibum gestures with a thumb over his shoulder.
“i’ll walk you home,” key offers. “i live over that way anyway.”
“alright,” kibum smiles gratefully.
they wander home slowly through the empty streets, bumping shoulders and sharing stories, their voices and laughter echoing in the darkness. by the time they reach kibum’s apartment block, key is sure that they’ve never met someone who gets them quite as well as kibum does.
“it was great meeting you,” kibum says quietly, scuffing his foot against the curb.
“yeah, you too,” key smiles warmly. “can we exchange numbers?”
“yeah sure,” kibum says at once, and key giggles at his enthusiasm. they swap numbers, key saving their number as ‘kibum’ with a key emoji next to it. kibum grins when he sees it, biting his lip shyly and slipping his phone back into his pocket.
“well, i’ll text you then?” key says after a few moments of silence.
“yeah, okay,” kibum nods. “text me when you get home so i know you're safe.”
“alright,” key chuckles, heart swelling at the concern. “bye, kibum.”
“night, kibum,” kibum sticks his tongue out before turning and heading into his building. key watches him go before turning on their heel, pulling their phone out and dialing for a taxi. they smile all the way home, overwhelmed with happiness at the rare treat of having met someone who they could connect so well with.
once they’re tucked into bed, two dogs snuggled safely against their chest, they pull out their phone and open a conversation with kibum. they text back and forth, teasing each other gently until key falls asleep with a smile still pulling at their lips.
