Madeira. Hiking Levada Da Calheta - Ponta Do Sol (Part 1)

Short sketches about hiking trails of Madeira. Our team, together with the local old-timers, volunteered to work around all the trails and Levadas on Madeira Island. Safety first! So, follow us!

We continue our exploration of Madeira hiking trails & levadas. Today I want to share with you Levada Da Calheta - Ponta Do Sol. This is the part of great levada Nova which goes to Porto Moniz, some people say the distance is about 60-70 km one way, so if you want to make it, you must be ready for camping. Since I am accompanied by my four leg friend (which I found one year ago In Calheta) I will divide my hiking by several parts.

When I started making that levada temperature was 16C, cloudy, humid...

...but 10 minutes later the sun came out from clouds and the weather was excellent during all my way.

On Madeira the weather is changeable, and always for the better, so don't assume it by the forecast (of course if it is not a storm or heavy rain). During my hiking, I passed eucalyptus forest, several mountain villages, small pastures with some little herds of cows and goats, I saw waterfalls and small mountain rivers, tunnels and gorges, marvellous valleys. I made some shots, but of course, image does not transmit the real feeling and full beauty of stunning views. Enjoy

That day overall I made 11km one way (+11km return to my car). 60km I left for the next time.
