Critical evaluation for my Portfolio and feedback
Portfolio update
After getting feedback from my two professionals and being edge towards narrowing in on an industry, I reshaped my portfolio and its contents based on the industry of commissioned editorial photography. Originally my work consisted of documentary work or so I thought. I have taken the advice of one of the professionals to incorporate between 10-15 images that portray the field I wish to go into. All the images in my portfolio are commissioned editorial projects.
Here are my final prints for my portfolio
Portfolio updated: The idea for this portfolio is to look to get into an industry that allows me to take full control of the image, working with the subject rather than working at them. The film industry is one that has always intrigued me, and at the beginning of my second year, I was given the opportunity to work on the set of a short film as the onset photographer, which I thoroughly enjoyed. These photographs, I believe take on board the feedback that I received and narrows into the working of setting up a scene, setting up a character and having full control of the image as a staged image.
Portfolio adjustment
Since I gained feedback from two professionals in the original industry I was looking to get into, I have had a change of heart and direction. I have always been passionate about documentary photography, however, recently I have become obsessed with staged imagery. The use of staged imagery in the film industry, political satire and an exploration/ opinion on depression, has been attempted this year and I feel as it has been solid work. Therefore, my portfolio will take form of staged imagery with the industry of film in mind.
Portfolio feedback from Louis Chan
Amount of Images
Fine.
First Impressions of Portfolio
I enjoyed the portfolio. There are several standout pictures (namely the Italian photographer and Woman against the blue wall) but there seems to be an inconsistency in regards to narrative. Secondly, the photographer needs to be willing to take chances, it all feels quite safe right now and I’m not getting a feel for who the person is behind the lens. Once the photographer narrows those things down they should be in good shape!
Technical Quality of Prints
Some instances of under and over exposure in the B & W images but otherwise of a good standard.
Technical Quality of photographs
I want to see more experimentation from the photographer. It’s all very clean and unobtrusive. Get your camera in their face and make me feel something for them.
Size of Portfolio
Fine, but without a clear narrative and engaging style can feel a little longwinded.
Editing/Pairing of images
The images are consistent and there is a clear thought process to their selection but yet I feel a little dissatisfied. I want to see something more!
Would you commission?
Yes, but only for one specific genre and they need to hone in on which one they most have a passion for. Documentary? Travel? editorial?
Improvements?
,
you aspire to? Look to them and find what their inspiration was and explore what it is about their work that stands out. Explore which genre or style gives you the most satisfaction. Although the ability to adapt to a commissioned piece of work is good for an employer to see. Once you find this it all becomes much easier.
Appropriate?
Yes and no, the portfolio is so varied but there are examples of work that feel inherently documentary.
professional futures- Portfolio
As part of my professional futures module I am required to create a portfolio and present it to a photographer in my field. I have found a cinematographer named Louis Chan who has worked in the field of documentary photography and photojournalism. I have approached him about looking at my portfolio and agreed to meet me this week to give me feedback,

Professional futures update
As part of my professional futures module, I have to create a portfolio which represents my chosen field and contact two professionals in order to get feedback on my portfolio. Currently I have contacted a documentary photographer called Robert Smith. As well as an active photographer, he is also a photographer teacher, I am due to meet him in the upcoming weeks to present my portfolio and gather some guidance and feedback on it.
