Brew Rig - AJ Ruby's 3 vessel 3 tier System with Control Panel
I just upgraded my brew rig from an electric 5 gallon batch rig (had 10 gallon kettles and a 10 gallon orange Home Depot cooler as a mashtun) to this electric 10 gallon batch rig. I learned a lot from brewing on my 5 gallon rig and added the “I wish I had” to these custom 20 gallon Spike Brewing kettles.
The temp probe for my BK in my old rig was high up, almost in the center of the 10 gallon kettle so on my 20 gallon kettles, I had them moved down to the bottom so that I can still do 5 gallon batches when I want too.
Also on my old rig, the electrical elements were attached on via weldless fittings. I could move the kettle around to easy as the cord to the elements were wrapped up. On these new kettles I had Spike add 2 inch TC ports on them so that I can remove the elements and easily bring the kettles over to the sink to wash out.
I have two SS Brewtech Chronicals (a 7 gallon for my 5 gallon batches and a 14 gallon for my 10 gallon batches) both fitted with their FTSS temp controller. The temp controllers are hooked up to a cooler full of water and the water in the cooler is chilled using an aquarium chiller, no ice packs needed.
I keg all of my brews and store them in a dorm room fridge Kegerator I made, it has room for two 5 gallon corny kegs and has a dual faucet tower.
Boiling Equipment: – A 20 Gallon custom Spike Brewing Kettle with Triclover mounted 5500 ULWD electric element using a Still dragon Triclover element housing (I added a 90 degree cable restraint, it came with a straight one). — – A 20 Gallon custom Spike Brewing HLT with Glass sight glass and Triclover mounted 5500 ULWD electrical element using a Still dragon Triclover element housing (I also added a 90 degree cable restraint to the HLT, it came with a straight one as well). — – Custom hand built electrical control panel with some guidance from Kal’s site at http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/. I mounted the panel on a television wall mount swing arm so that I can swing it in when not in use (above the brew kettle” and then swing it out before use to keep everything nice and compact. — – My own custom hand built bottom draining Mashtun from an old 15.5 gallon keg, lots of foam insulation and wood! Brew Rig - Brew Mobile
Hand-built, wooden brew sculpture on locking casters. Most thought was given to function. I wanted a setup that was gravity fed, portable, and sturdy. It has cut 2-3 hours out of my brewday and much less lifting of heavy and hot objects. It is also nice that everything I need on a brewday is on the Beermobile. I love having the extra 2 ft. work space next to the Mash Tun. I designed it to fit a small 8 ft trailer I have. It travels to group brewdays and other brew exhibitions in my area.
Even though it is made of wood, the burners are set in metal hangers and all surrounding areas are well flashed. I use custom fabricated 1 in. pipe as the racks that hold the vessels. Everything sets in sturdy and safe but is also very easy to tear down for cleaning. I put about 8 coats of polyurethane on the wood to make sure there will be no problems with waterlogging. The vessels are spray painted with high-temp black paint. I did this because I have seen a lot of buffed out shiny kettles, and I wanted something different. Shining those kegs is a lot of work. This way I can touch up the scratches and dings very easily.
All the propane is piped through copper flare fittings and pipe. It was easy and cheap. I plan to replumb it with black pipe in the future for the sake of durability. I run 2 burners, one jet burner under the HLT and one 10 inch Banjo under the boil kettle. It is plumbed to add another burner under the Mash Tun should I decide to direct heat the Mash Tun directly for temperature steps. So far no need because I usually do either single infusion mashes or Decoctions. It is a work in progress. since these photos were taken, I have added the water lines for tanking up the HLT and running the chiller. I have added a drawer for tools and measuring equipment. I plan to enclose the bottom storage area and put doors on the front to hide the mess underneath. Maybe fit it with some speakers.
Also pictured and never too far from the Beermobile is the Wateringcan. It is a found side by side fridge that holds 4 cornys and several cases of commersh.
Not pictured is the asundry of other appliance accumulated over the years for purposes of beer. Several lager fridges and couple of chest freezers in various phases of fitting out for serving stations. Everything works too!
