Brickclub: 3.3.1

This is another chapter of Gillenormand being rewarded for being an asshole. It’s something Hugo keeps sprinkling through these chapters, that Gillenormand has no incentive to become better because all his life he’s been rewarded for being terrible. We’re told here that he refuses to go anywhere where he won’t be the center of attention, a pretty classic Jerk move, but that people are happy to oblige him in this because, somehow, his presence is worth it to them. So he’s never incentivized to consider other people, because literally nothing in his life has taught him that he should bother, never mind how to actually do it.

Not that I’m excusing Gillenormand, mind! Plenty of us grow up with our bad habits being enabled and we still manage to grow into decent people on our own. But I think it’s part of Hugo’s larger conversation about social systems and their failures. He’s pretty scathing about the Ultra society that Gillenormand hangs out in, especially when he talks about the other dude in the salon and how aristocracy views notoriety completely differently from normal people. It’s very much a society that built itself up around obeying the whims of an absolute monarch at all times, and now has no monarch to obey, so instead they bow to the whims of tradition and social standing.

And it is, in its own way, a continuation of the gossip theme, and that might be the most scathing critique of them all. Hugo has not been shy or subtle when it comes to how he feels about gossip, and here we have a society that pretty much lives in it. You’re admitted because of who you know and what’s said about you, not who you are or what you’ve done. Reputation, which is to say gossip, is king. When placed into conversation with the real, lasting harm that reputation, which is to say gossip, have done to other characters in this novel, it’s a pretty damning assessment of how this society functions.

3.3.1

The tone of this chapter is slightly confusing, it comes across as snarky at times and sometimes serious. This chapter is full of references from actual people, that also have a strong hint of ‘In the Year 1817′ chapter. This too is roughly around the 1817 and a group of royalists at Madame la Baronne de T’s salon among whom Gillenormand feels right at home. We are told of a brief instance of how there are differences between the nobility and the bourgeoisie but Gillenormand with his ‘wit’ is able to become accepted among them. He is the right kind of person for their group because he says things that appear to be clever.

But the salon does just that- say a lot of clever things that lead to nothing, they drink tea and depending on the mood decide how they are going to make fun of the present age, they risk nothing, they do very little- and Hugo who keeps reminding us about the need for actions and active philosophy, is contrasting the royalists with their attitude of sitting around and making fun of things, with other groups who like puns such as the amis or the bishop. With bishop or the amis, they were actively using puns in their work. Here, the salon complains about every little thing, but does not contribute to society in any meaningful way.

They also make fun of the liberals and the bourgeoisie as ministers, much as Gillenormand did in one of the previous chapters by calling for a change of the ministers as a joke. It’s not clear whether all the jokes are supposed to mean anything, do they even have a strong political opinion, except make fun of Bonapartists and French Revolution. 

They parody the French Revolution and the Bonapartists, even using the same lyrics of Ca Ira! but turning the words against the Bonapartists, by calling for their execution. Considering how songs play a role in any movement and how important they were in the French Revolution, it feels like the salon using the songs actually dilutes their purpose, maybe? The songs become part of their jokes.

It’s also amusing that the salon granted amnesty to Comte de Lamothe Valois, whose wife was involved in forging the signature of Marie Antoinette for which the Queen was blamed. They seem to have forgiven him for the apparent betrayal. It sort of reminds me of the political conservative parties (at least where I live) having very little moral backbone and not minding making alliances with each other, even though they were enemies the day before. Although probably they took him because of the infamy surrounding him.

We have more references, where the royalists in the salon would in the brutal murder of Fualdes, would align themselves with the murderers(?) because the victim was a Bonapartist.

There are other quirks, the aristocrats are also not very careful about who they should associate with, considering themselves above that law too. This and the Count de Lamothe’s description gives the impression of Hugo’s snark in this chapter maybe

Monsieur Gillenormand is welcome here in this salon because he is both frivolous and with a commanding presence which his old age lends him. There is a saying in Persian, which I am badly translating, ‘Respect in old age is due to wisdom acquired not the length of years.’  He seems to be respected only because he is advanced in age.

His jokes are also in bad taste- Hugo does mention they are old style wit- everything to do with the 18th century which is past and not the 19th. Hugo is atleast clear that Gillenormand is outdated. 

Gillenormand thinks that any other kings except kings of France, are provincial, with provincial being associated with the rural/peasants/working class and therefore bad. So much for the European unity/harmony which Hugo was also fond of and he mentioned at the start of the Gillenormand chapters. But Gillenormand makes witty remarks which go well in the salon.

And with everything we know about the salon, everyone pities the young grandson because he is the son of a Bonarpartist, a brigand of the Loire (the brigands of the Loire reference to the army under Davout retreating to the Loire region). This young child’s main entry into society is through these salons, which are empty talk and nothing more but over time, even this empty talk might weigh heavily on the opinions of the child fed this diet.

Sidenote (There were lots of references in this chapter, most of these are taken from Donougher’s extensive notes in case someone does not have them):

Madame Baronne de T mentions a tub of Mesmer, which would really be this.  Madame Baronne de T, does not publish these memoirs of her husband, it is unclear why, maybe because she did not believe in science and mesmerism through magnets maybe. 

The Mercury reference is to the Greek God Hermes who is associated with the theft of Apollo’s oxen, as well as being a patron of thieves.

The many references relate to Louis XV and the people related- Madame de Pompadour was Louis XV’s mistress. Vaubernier was also Louis XV’s mistress married to Richelieu’s brother but Richelieu also had designs on her.

Brick Club 3.2.8 - 3.3.1

We are given the rundown of who is, by choice or otherwise, sharing in this life with Gillenormand. Mme. Gillenormand, with her attachment to her father’s house, her religiosity, and her aura of submission of course recalls Baptistine and Magloire. But the heavy emphasis on modesty above all virtues reminds me more of Mme. Victurnien, the woman who got Fantine fired by travelling to the Thenardiers’ inn to spy on Cosette. I sense she will not be an ally to the young Marius.

“These households of an old man and an old maid are not rare, and always have the touching aspect of two feeblenesses leaning upon each other.” In this case, the old man and the old maid propping each other up in order to loom over the final Gillenormand: “a child, a little boy, always trembling and mute before M. Gillenormand.”

Gillenormand is interested in the legacy that Marius represents, but certainly not in the child who needs affection.

Hooo boy, we are entering territory I am completely out of my element in. A lot of period-specific namedrops and a lot of royalist sentiment. There is something interesting to be said of the salon show of faded power. They don’t hold enough sway for their mocking of the revolution to make a drop in the political sphere, they just gather and trade nostalgic, toothless effrontery over t̸̡̛̘̯̘̍͐h̷̯̞̽ę̵̝͚͇̪̏ y̷̛̟͘o̸̱̩̓̌u̴̥͆ţ̵̩̯̥̈́͑h̸s̸̢͎̝̋͌͂́. 

Gillenormand may be an outsider, but he knows how to play the part, he’s one of the good ones. This sets up the context for the environment Marius is raised in: privileged but dissatisfied and distant from the realities he eventually encounters.
