Jakub Vrana that was a very sexy shootout goal and a CAPS WIN!
This segment would have been 100x better if theyd just had dexter go to therapy instead :/
Thinking about it and I think my favourite type of character, broadly speaking, are those that are in some way repressed in pursuit of their passions or objectives, but that push forward or learn to push forward anyway.
So just as an example, Riko Sakurauchi from Love Live. Girl is unable to convey the feeling she wants to with a particular song and so freezes up at a competition. Has to retreat to Uchiura and rediscover her passion for the piano, alongside discovering a new passion with school idols. For a while she’s nervous about even playing piano, and fears playing at the competition again, but as said, she rediscovers said passion, validates herself and her pursuit of the piano by winning in the competition, and even fuckin wins as a school idol too. Girl chased her dreams and made them come true.
Using a second Love Live example, Setsuna Yuki. In both SIFAS and the anime, she has to hide her school idol thing from her parents despite how passionate she is about it, she can’t unapologetically be herself despite how much she craves it. And then in the anime, she outright locks away her persona due to her passions clashing with and hurting others. A possible Niji season 2 could cover her coming out to her parents, which is something SIFAS handles really well, we see Setsuna be allowed to chase her passions. And then meanwhile in the anime, Yuu gets Setsuna to open up what she closed away again and lets her continue being the school idol she wants to be. Setsuna is allowed to chase her passions, which is all she wants.
How about another series with Madoka, for whom my favourite character is Homura? She’s in a slightly different position where just, more than anything she’s being forced to continually fight back against impossible odds. No matter how much she loops, she can’t save Madoka. But saving Madoka is all she wants to do. It’s not so much a passion as an objective and she’s repressing herself to achieve it, but god fuckin damn do I admire the grind.
There’s of course Kumiko Oumae too. Lackadaisical to begin with, can’t even bring herself to care when she doesn’t win gold with the rest of them in middle school, but as the series progresses her love for the euphonium develops into a really extreme passion and she wants to become special with it in the same way Reina is with the trumpet - Reina being a paragon of pursuit of one’s own passions who doesn’t take shit from anyone.
Shirase Kobuchizawa is another really strong example of this, repressed more so for society due to her fervent pursuit of an impossible dream. But she’ not gonna let that stop her - Shirase puts in more work than anyone else to get what she wants and by god does she, and she even has a very based spiteful moment against her repressors when she lands on Antarctica. Girl doesn’t even pop off for reaching that place she’s been longing for, for now getting a chance to truly get the closure she seeks - nah she pops off because every single person who told her she wouldn’t manage this has been proven wrong, she’s justified her pursuing her passion because it shuts up the haters. Very cool!
Then to get into some characters that stretch this definition a little bit, Tae Hanazono. Girl loves and is passionate about guitar but more than that, loves and is passionate about PoPiPa, and in performing with this group. Where she faces repression is when that love gets challenged in s2 by CHU2′s attempts to recruit her into RAS - Tae rolls so fucking hard while she’s there that the rest of PoPiPa sort of expect her to join RAS. She shows her own passion for and desire to stay with PoPiPa via the very Tae-like method of writing a song in Returns. Love it.
Just one other character I’ve got that really fits into this and they are sort of stretching the definition again, but Fate Testarossa. By nature the nicest person in the universe, but she’s forced to hurt people by the mother she’s trying so desperately to save - she has to supress her own nature or she’ll just be subject to horrible abuse from her mum. It’s only when she’s taken care of in the finale of season 1 do we start seeing the true Fate blossom - that being the aforementioned nicest person in the universe.
Unsure why specifically I like this type of character so much - maybe I just admire the ability to pursue one’s own passion relentlessly as someone who pretty much lacks in any sort of passion at all. No extant outside forces are repressing me or anything here, I just sort of lack motivation. Idk, shit be wildin. Great fun getting to fall in love with these characters though.
RODERICK 👀 hey
I don’t think these teams like each other 😉
