Book #4: As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl by John Colapinto
Published: 2006 Genre: medical non-fiction/ biography When I first read it: At some point in 2014.
Plot summary: In 1965 a young Canadian couple had a set of identical twin boys and months later while the boys were undergoing a procedure for a routine circumcision one of the boys, named Bruce at the time lost his penis after the equipment being used by the surgeon had a mechanical malfunction. Distraught by their son’s disfigurement and told that his continued life would be a fate worse then death the Reimers found hope after learning about experiments and theories of renowned sexologist, Dr. John Money. Dr. Money began an experiment to prove his theory that gender was learned and not biologically written before birth. Bruce would be re-named Brenda and be made into a girl at any cost. Trigger Warning: This is a horrific and tragic true story. Dr. Money was wrong. Brenda, re-named David later on was never able to adopt a female gender identity. Frustrated with his failure, Dr. Money falsified his study, sexually abused and traumatized both Reimer children and worse...His lies negatively affected HUNDREDS of people. Worst of all David and his brother both committed suicide as adults, in part because of the trauma of what they were put through. Brain became schizophrenic and David’s depression became all consuming. One of the last things David Reimer and his brother did was out themselves as Dr. Money’s test subjects and tell the world the truth of what happened.
