The Nitty Gritty: You might recognize Shameik Moore’s name as being in the 2015 comedy / drama Dope, a film that I really enjoy, but after I picked that up last year (when it came out on DVD, I believe), I found out that Moore was also an R&B singer. I listened to his debut EP, 30058, a couple times, and the EP was good, but it didn’t do a whole lot for me. I recently decided to go back and listen to this EP, while I was looking through my iTunes for anything to listen to. Moore also released a new song, entitled “Cautious,” sometime towards the end of last year, and I thought I’d download that, too, just to check it out. I’ve spent a couple of days with this stuff, and I feel the same way a year later – this EP is good, but it’s forgettable as all hell. I hate to say that, because he’s a good actor, as well as a good singer, but he’s doing what every other R&B artist is doing. This sounds like a more PG-version of Trey Songz, frankly, and that’s not a bad thing, but it’s also not a great thing. It’s very bland, uninteresting, and leaves a bit to be desired. His voice is nice, and the hooks are pretty smooth, but the lyrics and songs themselves are very forgettable, so I have no desire to listen to this more than a few times. Thankfully, the EP is free to download, but I don’t know if I’d recommend it.
Would I recommend this? Well, I don’t know, like I said, because it all depends on how you feel about more “generic” stuff. This is pretty bland, but it’s not bad. It’s just nothing I haven’t heard, and not really in an interesting or well-done way. This EP isn’t too bad, but it doesn’t do anything all that amazing, so I have no desire to come back to this more than a couple times. If you’re into this kind of music, and you don’t care about how bland something sounds (only because you’ll gladly listen to more of it, not that your taste is bad), you’ll definitely enjoy this. It’ll give you exactly what you want, but I’ve heard this stuff done before, as well as better, so I have no desire to listen to this all that much. I like it, sure, but its replay value is pretty short. With that said, though, I’ll listen to anything else that Moore puts out, especially if it’s a mixtape. I wouldn’t mind checking out more stuff from him, because he has a nice voice, that’s for sure. It’s just that I don’t really care for his sound all that much, or what he’s saying, so I’m a bit torn. I would check this out, though, only if you’re really into R&B, otherwise you’re not missing too much.
