Wonderful views of Ouaisné and St Brélade’s Bay from Portlet Common. It’s officially the middle of the year and I haven’t even been in the sea yet - that al changes tomorrow with the start of @30baysin30daysjersey! I think it’s going to be a bit of a shock to get in the water this year and it still doesn’t feel warm enough out there….. it is supposed to be a challenge though! The slip at La Grande Maison I discovered this Bach the first year I did the #30baysin30days challenge and it’s one of those little gems that people often overlook. There’s no cafe, no facilities and it’s a stony beach. But - swimming off the slip at the high tide is heaven! The water is clear and calm and it’s so peaceful. I can’t wait to get back into the water again this summer! Swim #31 - Les Écréhous Since the #30baysin30daysjersey challenge allows for swimmers to finish their bays beyond July, I have taken the opportunity to add on a ‘bonus’ swim! This is my 6th visit to this offshore reef, part of the parish of St Martin. The reef is halfway (sort of) between Jersey and France and the coast of Normandy was really clear today (so close and yet so far!). This is the first time I’ve ever seen Lea Écréhous at such a low tide, it is an extensive reef. The tide was coming up fast and when you turned around bits of beach that you had been standing in just weren’t there any more! The fishing huts can now be privately owned (for a large sum of money) although they don’t have running water or electricity. That truly is getting away from it all. It was pretty quiet out there, apart from the terns who were nesting and dive bombing the herring gulls. Bliss.... Swim #30 - L’Etacq Air temp: 20.9C Sea temp: 17.1C According to #governmentofjersey And that’s it! Today is the last day of July and officially the last day of the challenge. This is a picture of L’Etacq, my last swim that I completed at the weekend. I’ve felt a bit sad not swimming this week but the tide was really low and I’m glad I didn’t plan to do any swimming as I’ve had a shocker of a week at work. With any luck the two trips I’ve got planned at the weekend will allow me to do some extra swims at the offshore reefs around Jersey but that will be weather dependent. L’Etacq was kind of empty and wavy so I was slightly nervous getting in but there was another lady there and we had a good chat so that gave me some confidence. I’ve missed the group swims this year as they’re usually good fun but hopefully everything will be back to normal next year. Swim #29 - St Ouen’s Bay (Watersplash) Air temp: 20.9C Sea temp: 17.1C According to #governmentofjersey My fifth swim on Saturday and my penultimate swim this year! I always find swimming at the Splash a bit difficult as there are loads of surfers and I don’t want to get in their way. I chose a spot just off to the side where it was clear for swimming. I thought it would be a fairly easy swim but the beach doesn’t slope gently, it’s quite up and down so even though the water is shallow, every now and then it becomes deeper. I don’t think I can explain that any better! It means swimming was tricky because I’d be swimming along and then suddenly my foot would catch the floor and I’d basically be in about 3in of water! I eventually got a reasonable swim done, the waves are pretty big so it’s not the easiest. The sea wall here means that you get some really fantastic waves when it is high tide. As the tide was going out there was just this little sliver of beach available. Swim #28 - La Pulente Air temp: 20.9C Sea temp: 17.1C According to #governmentofjersey I never think of La Pulente as a ‘nice’ place to swim, it’s a little bit seaweedy and not that popular an area to just sit around. When the tide goes out there are some rock pools which are fun. In fact once I was in the water it was not bad at all, clean and slightly wavy and a fairly pleasant temperature. La Pulente is well serviced in terms of facilities, there’s a pub (soon closing but will hopefully reopen) and a kiosk that always has a big queue and does some really good coffee as well as the usual toilets and reasonable parking. There are some holiday properties here too and a path that snakes around the headland to Petit Port with some amazing views of St Ouen’s Bay. St Ouen’s Bay AKA 5 mile beach (it’s actually about 3 miles!) spans three parishes - this end is St Brélade, next St Peter and then St Ouen. Swim #27 - Ouaisné Air temp: 20.9C Sea temp: 17.1C According to #governmentofjersey Although Ouaisné (pronounces ‘way nay’) is next door to St Brélade’s Bay the difference is astonishing. Ouaisné is a much wilder beach and because it is slightly more south west facing it gets the full force of our prevailing wind. As a result the beach was significantly less crowded than St Brelade’s and a bit rougher too. The waves were fun and the water surprisingly warm but the breeze was a bit nippy! Swim #25 - St Brélade’s Bay Air temp: 20.9C Sea temp: 17.1C According to #governmentofjersey There is a reason that St Brélade’s Bay is one of the top best beaches in the whole of Britain (according to #TripAdvisor). This sheltered, sandy, well provisioned beach is stunning. This was my second swim of the day. The beach was busy-ish around noon but there was still plenty of parking. Usually the opening and closing swims of the #30baysin30daysjersey challenge are here and I usually try and attend the opening one so this is one of the first bays I tick off. This year has been so different and it feels weird that I haven’t been here yet. The waves were awesome, I had a really long swim along the bay (the swell was quite challenging), swallowed a large amount of seawater 🤢 and had a play around in the waves. I wanted to swim to Ouaisné, which I’ve done before it was a bit too far today so instead I was lazy and drove round there!
