30 day reborn challenge but i just write whenever i feel like it, day 1 - Protagonist
Ariel tries to look nonchalant as they watch the station master look over their boarding pass. From their angle they can just about see the text printed onto the paper, information about their train car and seat that they hadn’t had the time to memorize. They shiver, thinking of the moment when a warm summer atmosphere had given way to cold night air, and pull their coat more tightly around themself.
“Reborn City, huh?” The station master says. “They sure have been pushing that new League.”
They shrug. The man looks at them for a moment, waiting for them to speak, and then gives up and glances back at the boarding pass.
“I need you to give me your name. Just for security purposes.”
Right. Of course. “Ariel - Ariel Hikari.” They stumble over their words when they remember that most people have last names, picking something out by memory. Hikari. That’s Dawn’s surname… they can only hope that she’s safe, wherever she is.
“Gender… non-binary, right?”
“Yes.”
“All set, then. Just between you, me, and the ol’ battered fence post, I hear Reborn City’s kind of a dump. Why anyone would wanna go there is beyond me, but a lot of you ambitious Trainer-type folk have been headin’ out in droves. That League must really be something… but off you go now. Train’s leaving any minute.”
He waves towards the train doors and Ariel walks past him. They’ve never been on a train before, so they find themself looking around with curiosity. The station master had been right - it’s mostly young adults on the train, no elders or children in sight. Poke balls clipped to belts are as common as bags of luggage.
In all the activity and noise, it’s a miracle Ariel manages to find their seat before the train starts moving. They have nothing but an empty bag with them, which they put beside them on their seat. The outside world quickly becomes a blur, and they watch through the window as the grays of the city give way to shades of sandy brown. Ariel has no idea how long the journey is going to take, but they can wait. It’s not like they have any other choice.
