The 369th Infantry Regiment, the 'Harlem Hellfighters' of WWI, part three . By October 1918, they were reassigned to the quieter village of Vosges, and remained there until Armistace Day, Nov 11, 1918. On Nov 25th, they made their last advance and on Nov 26th, reached the banks of the River Rhine, becoming the first Allied unit to do so. Dec 12th, 1918, they were relieved of assignment and sent home. The unit was 'demobilized' at Camp Upton, NY. The 369th became the first American unit to march up Fifth Avenue of New York City, to their Armory in Harlem from the Washington Square Park Arch. Among the numerous honors the 369th received, they count 1 Medal of Honor, numerous Distinguised Service Crosses, a unit citation pinned to their colors, and the first French 'Croix de Guerre' awarded to an American, Pvt Henry Johnson, with a total of 170 'Croix de Guerre' awarded among the entire unit, on Dec 13, 1918. Officially, the 369th was under fire for a total of 191 days, never lost a foot of gained ground, never had any men taken prisoner of war- they did have 2 captured but later recovered within days, and only once failed to fulfill an objective due to French failures. By the end of WWI, they had been at the battles of Champagne-Marne, Meuse, Argonne, Champagne 1918, Alsace 1918- where they lost 1500 men, the highest casualty loss of any US regimrnt at the time, and fought at the Battle of Belleau Wood and at Chateau-Thierry. They went on to serve just as honorably in WWII, reorganised as the 369th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment. In 1933, the 369th Regiment Armory was created to honor the unit for their service. The Armory stands at 142nd & Fifth Avenue in the heart of Harlem. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, and as a City Landmark in 1985. In 2017, a documentary movie titled 'The Hatlem Hellfighters Great War' was released. The Story of The Harlem Hellfighters - 369th Infantry! “Uncommon valor was a common virtue.” “They came home, only to be spat upon, lynched, denied housing, denied service at restaurants, denied employment, denied basic rights and decency by the very country they served so courageously, valiantly, and selflessly.” The "Harlem Hellfighters" was an all-black National Guard unit, the 369th Infantry, that was among the first American forces to arrive in Europe during World War I. The 369th Infantry was originally the 15th New York (Colored) Regiment. The 369th regiment commenced basic training at Camp Whitman in July 1917 then reassigned to Spartanburg, South Carolina to complete their training. They were deployed to France and reached the Western Front in January 1918. The "Harlem Hellfighters" received their nickname from the German enemy who referred to them as Hell Fighters - 70% of the 369th Infantry considered Harlem to be their home. The 369th was under the command of mostly white officers including their commander, Colonel William Hayward. The 92d and 93d Divisions had some black officers, although white officers dominated the command structure. The African Americans in WW1 served in racially segregated units and most were limited to serving in labor battalions - the Harlem Hellfighters were an exception. General John J. Pershing assigned the 369th to the 16th Division of the French Army. The 369th were trained to use French weapons and they wore French helmets - the French helmet became the official patch of the unit. The 369th never lost a prisoner or gave up a foot of captured ground. A snapshot of a few of the men who made up the elite fighting team of the 369th Infantry.  They were known as the Harlem Hellfighters.

 In 1919, the 369th infantry regiment marched home triumphantly from World War I. They had spent more time in combat than any other American unit, never losing a foot of ground to the enemy, or a man to capture, and winning countless decorations.

 The regiment had to fight alongside the French because America’s segregation policy prohibited them from fighting with white U.S. soldiers.

Though they returned as heroes, this African American unit faced tremendous discrimination, even from their own government. The Harlem Hellfighters, as the Germans named them, fought courageously on—and off—the battlefield to make Europe, and America, safe for democracy.
