Announcement regarding 37025 and 22nd August
The Directors have made the decision to withdraw 37025 from the 22nd August charity railtour from Crewe to Bournemouth. As of Wednesday morning, with just over 3 weeks to go until the railtour, the locomotive was still to receive approval and certification for operation on Network Rail and, although the paperwork submission for this is planned to be made next week, there is no date for when the certification will be granted. This leaves very little time for any test running or the approval by DRS for operation on their safety case. In addition to this, the loco still needs a TPWS aerial as one of the new ones failed shortly after installation and has gone back for repair; any approval is subject to this being fitted and the whole system retested.
Although it had initially been planned that the loco would be ready in April, a long list of things have gone wrong in the meantime including faults discovered during testing and problems with new equipment from suppliers. Recently the visit to the East Lancashire Railway saw two component failures and the loco had to be withdrawn from the event although it should be noted that these failures could both have occurred on the main line. The return move north was then delayed by a week. Since then repairs have been completed and 37025 worked successfully at the SRPS Diesel Gala last weekend.
The Directors are extremely disappointed that 37025 won’t be able to participate in the railtour and hopefully we will be able to contribute towards something in the future.
Should you have any questions or would like further information about 37025, 37261 or anything else relating to the Group, please get in touch with me or one of the Group’s other directors.
Kind regards
Nick
Good evening
Following last week’s positive run up and having fixed the niggles that we’d discovered, this week we took the opportunity to test 37025 by taking seven coaches up to Manuel. You will be able to see from the attached photos that we made it to Manuel with the boiler doing its job. Despite the leaky first coach, 37025 was able to heat the full rake of coaches without misbehaving. 37025 also performed well – it was the first trip up the hill since the running day on 11 February 2011. More niggles were found but nothing serious and these have either already been sorted or will be sorted over the next week or so.
Well done to all involved and particularly all those who have been volunteering at Bo’ness; we’re getting close…
Cheers
Nick

For the month of November, I am challenging every one of you to keep a tally of certain drinks you consume. For each drink you have, you should charge yourself a small monetary amount, say 20p. At the end of the month, you can then donate the lot to the 37025 Mainline Steam Heat Fund. Ideas for drinks could be: • Alcoholic drinks e.g. 20p for each pint, glass of wine or nip of Bunnahabhain you have; • Heated drinks e.g. 20p for each cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate or bovril you have; or • Any other appropriate vice that you can think of. The purpose of this challenge isn’t to break your bank; it’s just a novel way for the Group to bring in some much needed funds. As for me, I am going to set aside 20p for each hot drink I have. Why not something alcoholic? Apparently I drink more cups of tea than pints of beer! The purpose of this challenge is to help raise the last of the money needed to finish the work to make 37025 mainline ready and also to help complete the weatherproofing work on 37261 when it comes north.

Another £11.30 raised for the Scottish Thirty-Seven Group following the annual emptying of the "cow bank". How much change have you got stashed away? Have you thought about gathering it together, counting it up and then donating it towards 37025 and 37261?
Acquisition of 37261
We are delighted to announce that, in the last few days, the Group has acquired a heavily stripped 37261 ‘Caithness’ from DRS. Furthermore, the SRPS have agreed in principle that the locomotive can be stored at Bo’ness. The locomotive will arrive at Bo’ness without most of its major components because 37261 has undergone substantial component recovery. Over the long-term, the missing components will be sourced and, where resources and time permits, 37261 will be restored to full working order and become a member of the SRPS Diesel Fleet. This restoration can be expected to take several years. Furthermore, we can assure you that the acquisition of 37261 will not detract from the hard work that is currently being undertaken on 37025, 37403 and the type twos at Bo’ness. The Group remains steadfastly committed to completing the work on 37025 by the end of this year. While the restoration work on 37025 is now in its final stages, we will only complete this project with some assistance. As always, we are entirely dependent on the volunteers that come down to Bo’ness. We have volunteers working on 37025 at Bo’ness every weekend and on some week nights too. Any assistance you can offer will be very gratefully received – there are plenty of jobs to be done. If you can help in any way, please let contact Steven Ramage (details below) and he will let you know how you can get involved. Financially, there is still a shortfall of around £7,000 in the funding needed to complete the outstanding work on 37025. Please do what you can to help. This continued support will be invaluable in our efforts to return 37025 to the mainline. To help both 37025 and 37261 financially you can: • arrange a transfer to the Group's bank account: Account number = 72756463 Sort Code = 87-37-12; • transfer money using the Group’s PayPal account: [email protected]; or • send a cheque made payable to 'Scottish Thirty-Seven Group' to: Nick Chadha, 13/5 Bruntsfield Avenue, Edinburgh, EH10 4EL. As always, all donations come with the promise of invitations to the first public run of 37025 with its boiler in operation and its first public run on the mainline. 37261 ‘Caithness’ – a forty-nine year history New to Darnell on 20 January 1965 as D6961, seventeen years were spent in BR’s Eastern Region before 37261 migrated north to join 37025, first at Eastfield from 1982, and then Inverness in 1985. It was during it’s time at Inverness that 261 became acquainted with the ‘Caithness’ nameplates and gained popularity as a sterling powerful performer all over the Highlands. Following another spell in BR’s Eastern Region between 1991 and 1994, 261 returned to Scotland for a further four years before finally migrating to Toton in December 1998. After only a few months, 37261 was withdrawn from traffic by EWS in February 1999. However, instead of heading for the scrapline like many other engines at the time, 37261 was given a lifeline and an eleven month trip to France. Upon its return, the erstwhile ‘Caithness’ was stored and initially sold to Ian Riley who restored it to working order and then to WCRC who regularly put it to work on the Royal Scotsman around Scotland. After a couple of years with WCRC, DRS bought the locomotive and operated it until 37261’s final withdrawal on 20 January 2014, exactly forty-nine years after being accepted to traffic. Should you have any questions or would like further information about 37025, 37261 or anything else relating to the Group, please get in touch with either me or one of the Group’s other directors.
