The public place I will observe in this project is the bus stop for the bus route, 38A to Rouge Hill Go station. The bus stop is quite significant to me because I take that bus daily to commute back home. The reason why I chose this bus stop is because my friend and I have been commuting from this bus stop for the past 3 years and we have some amazing memories attached to the bus stop. The bus stop consists of a concrete slab and a pole with “Route 38A” labeled on it with no shed. Moreover, the bus stop is not always crowded like the other bus stops at UTSC and so it gives me ample space to get on the bus. Although in rush hours there are many students who ride the bus to the Go station as TTC takes them a longer time to travel to Toronto, Downtown. There aren’t many students who live towards the route I take so majority of the time it is just myself, a couple students and a couple of elderly individuals who live near Morrish road. The bus stop has one drawback in the winter season that it is never shovelled on time. This results in the bus stop being extremely slippery which makes it harder for myself and fellow students to walk towards the stop.
The bus stop usually smells like emissions from the cars as it is located on the main road. Moreover, in the summer it smells like trees as it is surrounded by tall trees located on the University of Toronto property. Also, in the spring/summer you can hear birds chirping which to me is quite soothing as firstly, spring makes its return back to Toronto after four long months of frigid cold winter. Secondly, it reminds me how the animals like squirrels and birds are also a part of the space around me. It represents how your local space transforms seasonally and there is life that departs during the start of winter and returns in the spring.
One of the unintended uses of the bus stop includes students taking advantage of crossing the road from the bus stop and secondly, board their cars right where the bus stop is. Crossing the road is extremely dangerous as there are cars passing at a speed of 60km/hr and students still tend to cross. In my 3 years experience of taking the transit from the bus stop, I have witnessed one student being involved in an accident with the bus and many getting honked by the cars passing. In response to this, I have always wondered whether the university will make a crossing for the pedestrians so that they can cross safely and avoid risking their lives. Furthermore, I believe it’s quite unfair for the students who have to travel towards Military Trail and Ellesmere road to cross the road and walk towards the south all over again. The accident that took place in 2017 struck a pedestrian who was jaywalking but did not suffer from extreme injuries which also raises more concerns about how many pedestrians will it take for the university to realize that a pedestrian crossing is required near the bus stop. The other issue is that a lot of parents do not want to drive inside the parking lot due to the chaos of cars in rush hours therefore, they end up picking their children up from the bus stop. This becomes a real struggle in the winter as the sides of the roads are covered in thick icy snow which narrows the road and secondly, when parents are lining up to pick their children up from the main road it blocks the road leading up to a huge lineup. That also leads to busses getting stuck in the lineup making the passengers late for their errands and classes.
It surprises me how the bus stop every year has new faces of people there and that makes me realize how the world is full of people who tend to travel via transit and heavily rely on it especially in Scarborough. It also makes me realize how we live in a diverse world with many different faces from all around the world. For me the bus stop has provided me with enough memories and knowledge about my local space and the people it consists of. Also, it has allowed me to develop a relationship to my surroundings and think about various suggestions in order to improve it. The bus stop will always be a place I will remember in my life because not only did it allow me to develop a special relationship with space but also memories related to my 4-year university career.
