Three Days From Retirement (or 3DFR if you prefer) first formed back in 2013 in Edinburgh and despite a handful of line-up changes have moved from strength, with their blend of widescreen post-rock finding favour with Infinite Hive Records who have linked up with the band for the release of their new EP, If We Keep Walking, Eventually We'll Fall Off.
Like a great many bands of this nature the group take their more obvious influences from the likes of Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky and yes the band move from melodic to an all out thrash, but unlike the majority of bands of this nature, the music grips the listener right from the off.
The lead track, AvalancheError opens with a beautiful melodic passage full of texture and deft finger picking, whilst the rhythm section rumble in the background to create an impressive soundscape that ebbs and flows with style and grace, whilst the predictable turn of power towards the end of the near six minute track initially startles, striking hard, showcasing the band's more feral influences.
The opening track seeps into Shatner's Rhapsody, which itself opens with a sparse bass and a somewhat desolate backing before a drum beat snaps into action, next a simplistic guitar joins the mix as the track slowly builds, the haunting backing is pushed to forefront, whilst the aforementioned guitar acts as shards of light in the dense mix before transforming into a crunchy down-tuned metallic riff as the track develops further into it's nine minute duration, before finishing with a burst of shimmering guitar over layers of atmospheric rock.
3DFR perhaps, save the best to last with Spooky Action Across Distance adding spoken word vocals to their stunning widescreen vision, adding a further dimension (and who doesn't like the idea collaboration between Arab Strab and Mogwai??) to their already impressive arsenal of sound.
If We Keep Walking, We'll Fall Off is post-rock at it's absolute best, the tracks on offer here, have a wonderful cinematic feel, that has unsurprisingly seen Three Days From Retirement courting attention from an independent film maker in their native Scotland (actually if the sequel for Trainspotting is looking for some vivid instrumental mood music look no further!) which I suspect maybe the first of many offers to come, I don't know about retirement this lot have a long future ahead of them.
