Newly-restored art on 3DJOES: The 1983 Hi-Flier Destro poster shown here was scanned at 3DJOES HQ and meticulously restored by Chad Hucal. Thank you to Steven Koch for loaning us the poster!
From 3djoes:
How cool is this?! 1994 Cobra Commander v7, one of Ron Rudat's last ARAH designs, made it into the live action 1993 Star Brigade commercials! How?! Well, that figure was designed by Ron in December of 1992, along with several other figures that would eventually see release in 1994 under the Star Brigade banner. These were originally designed under the working name of Out of This World (O.T.W.).

The Art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero celebrates the painted artwork of the legendary toy line that dominated toy aisles from 1982-1994. This comprehensive Omnibus Hardcover includes restored scans and photographs of every carded figure, vehicle, playset, and peripheral product from this era. Exclusive scans of original paintings, Kodachrome transparencies, and Kodak photo prints give an unprecedented look at the unadorned painted art of G.I.JOE: A Real American Hero, including some unreleased paintings that never made it into production!
The secret origin of Serpentor:
When asked about his inspiration for Serpentor, Ron said “I think we were starting to head toward fantasy with that guy. Seeing he was Cobra, why not put him in a Cobra outfit?”
Ron had seen the 1982 Conan the Barbarian film and recalled the lead antagonist, Thulsa Doom (portrayed by James Earl Jones). Interestingly, in one scene Thulsa Doom transforms into a serpent while he sits upon his throne, similar to Cobra Commander’s transformation in 1987’s G.I.JOE: The Movie. Later, Thulsa reappears in human form carrying a snake. He straightens it out, draws his bow, and fires the snake like an arrow – piercing Valeria as the protagonists ride away. Similarly, Serpentor pierces Duke with a straightened out snake spear in G.I.JOE: The Movie.
Ron recalled that his designs for Serpentor came first, and then he designed the Air Chariot second. Guy Cassaday refined the design and built the Air Chariot from Ron’s drawings.
Gijoe preproduction art
Seen here is a copy of an original buck used in the creation of G.I.Joe: A Real American Hero action figures. Sculptors would add clay to this armature to bring a new figure to life, all while ensuring their clay did not limit the the play value of the toy.
