3 Things I Learned Today
- relearned the ~> syntax in Gemfiles
- RabbitMQ runs on Erlang VM (!)
- I’m still holding onto some of that perspective I always get after coming back from Burning Man. Like, “oh wow I’m thinking this way. That’s interesting to observe.”

Loaded a background image via css, added opacity to :before element.
- You have to drill down to get to the errors in New Relic, spend time being patient there.
- Held discussion with a coworker about web components. How they could be part of the next HTML spec, how they're like encapsulated DOMs that can be added to a page easily, holding all markup, javascript, and css inside them. Suggested I checkout Polymer to learn more.
3 things I learned today
- Tradeoffs of spending a ton of time and money refactoring a process that will be replaced with something else soon.... or use a global variable to fix it right now. Doesn't feel good, but y'know, pragmatism.
- #where statements in a loop apparently are n+1 queries. Treat the ActiveRecord Relation as an array in memory and use methods that prevent another db lookup. So #select instead of #where, etc.
- node, npm and hubot are a totally different monster. Didn't know where to begin when our hubot wouldn't build locally for me. #thelearningneverends

- More a reminder but, when I stop being frustrated I can do all of this.
- More Marionette framework refactoring. No manifest files for submodules, just controllers.
Dove back into Rails and Active Record today for a small feature for the first time in a long while. Had to look up some stuff but it was a non-blocking flow experience. Had it largely done in only a few hours.
3 things I learned today
- Didn't check my ssh remote access before going home, total noob mistake. So when I go to ssh into the server I need to deploy on, I can't get in. So back to the office I go at 9pm at night. Clearly a mistake I'll not make again soon.
- Marionette doesn't care how you organize your files. Refactoring existing modules under a 'Component' namespace was a fucking breeze.
- how do I convince everyone we need a hubot?
3 things I learned today
- hack coding some barely working prototype under the gun for a deadline is a horrible way to work. No one is proud of the work, business people get wrong expectations. Iterating on the same idea when you build it 'for real' is the only up shot.
- Dealing with people too attached to their ideas is hard to deal with.
- DevOps is going to be my way to go.
3 things I learned today
- When I started my journey in software engineering a friend once told me there will be times where you'll be under the gun, and you'll write some really shitty code, just to get it out the door. Looks like that time's come. Today started some serious cowboy code this week so we can demo where we're going. We're talking on the level of original iPhone demo, where steps had to be done in a very specific order or else the whole thing would crash. I'm already have reservations about working this way, we'll see about doing a retrospective in a week or so's time.
- Pair programming continues to keep me engaged and focused.
- It appears I might finally be getting some devops responsibilities. Excited to see where I could take this.
3 things I learned today
- communication of ideas is the the most important and very hard.
- Sometimes you gotta say 'fuck it' and just git pull.
- Deployed to production solo for the first time. Automated rake task is nice for small deployments. Would like something more automated for the larger ones, but feel there will be too many unique things, migrations etc to do full push button automation. Want to look into the devops tools like chef, puppet and ansible now that I've done actual deployment.
