Draw them All Decimation part 2. Another tough tricky one for the comic strips. Done w all respect for the writing and the acting, especially by Christian Antidormi/Tiberius and Aaron Jakubenko/Sabinus. Realized totally didn't mention the main character in that post!
Um, he's Spartacus. What can I say? He's going to die, it's going to hurt, he's a good man who is a bit blinded by his desire to do what's "right" that he's making mistakes, as many do in situations like this. He's trying to do something great, something world changing, and he has to know he can't succeed. He just can't, not against the Romans at this time.
This episode was one big literary feat, if you will. It's nearing the show's climax, if not in the midst of it (again, still haven't seen everything, but I'm not stupid). Dissension has to be shown, drama has to rise, even shit we don't like has to happen between characters that we adore, or we won't care in the end. And by "care" I mean we won't have an emotional reaction, be it either joy or anger or sorrow, and really, does ANYONE expect anything NEAR the first in that list to occur? Because if the answer is yes to that question, you REALLY need to go read some history :/
That episode was AMAZING. I'm sorry. Going through the tags I saw so many complaints. Maybe it's because I'm new to the show, but all of that? I don't know, it was freaking awesome.
Crixus and Naevia? Totally making sense.
Nemetes? Complete and utter bastard and I will definitely cheer when he goes after tonight, but seriously? Makes sense!
Gannicus and Saxa are the two I'm probably cheering for the most at this point, well, beyond Agron and Nasir because duh.
The Decimation, BOTH sides, was brutal and felt completely accurate for this stage of the story.
Julius Caesar? (DUDE that guy looks so familiar, and I've searched and I'm pretty sure I've never seen him anywhere, but it's BUGGING ME.) Totally feels real and honest and perfect.
I even don't hate Agron's apparent jealousy.
We're dealing with a HUGE group of fucked up people in a very different world than our own. They're going to be so over-the-top it's going to hurt no matter what. This whole THING is going to hurt. (And again I ask, WHY THE FUCK DID I THINK THIS WAS A SHOW I NEEDED TO START WATCHING NEAR THE END?!?!?!) (Although, let's be honest, the end being the third of three short seasons? Plus GOTA? Eh, I'll deal.)
I don't know. I think this was what I was expecting. (Disclaimer: Yeah, this was only the fourth episode I've seen. Blood and Sand and Vengeance should be here next week, and I will be slowly making my way through everything between class work and studying. But thanks to youtube and tumblr and the net in general, I don't feel like I'm missing that much, except of course actually getting to watch everything that got the show to this point.) But I didn't come into this thinking it was going to be full of hearts and roses. It's ancient Rome during a rebellion; neither of things says "happy happy joy joy" to me.
And as for some of the reactions I've seen? It's like some are suddenly grokking the idea that this isn't going to end happily? Like, AT ALL. And if it were to? Personally, it wouldn't feel true to what the show is or should be, really. It's not a happy show. It wasn't a happy event in history. I don't think we're supposed to really even LIKE Naevia or Nemetes at this point, I think at best were supposed to feel pity for Crixus, we're supposed to like Gannicus because he's probably going to be one of the closest to dying a "hero's" death. Like I said, this is one huge bunch of fucked up people, and if things ended with ANYONE going off happily into the sunset? Umm, no? Stupid? Lame? Just, uh-uh?
(Though yeah, I will admit that at the end, in my head at least, Agron and Nasir will be off raising goats somewhere, like many fans seem to have settled on, even if it's in the Elysian Fields or the Germanic lands. But if ANYTHING like that happened on the show? GAG.)
Now I think I'm going to go to bed because I'm exhausted. Shit, that was rough. And so much fake blood. I have to finger-filter way too much with this show. The sex (okay, most of the sex ;) bores me. But the violence? *shiver* 'Tis a bit much.
