Teen Wolf Mythology : The One with the Automatic Writing

Part 4: The one with the Axis Mundi.

So Lydia zoned out and wandered, without realizing, into a music class that she wasn't supposed to be in. Then drew a tree and it absorbed all her attention to the point that she didn't notice her surroundings.

The fact that she was drawing a tree in an episode where it is revealed that Druid means 'wise oak' and that whoever is behind the murders is probably a bad Druid otherwise known as a Darach in Gaelic which in turn means 'dark oak'. Probably not a coincidence.

So why was Lydia drawing trees? Is she a Druid? She is pretty smart with her 170 IQ so I'd classify her as 'wise' but Stiles seems to be the one with Druid powers because in Celtic Mythology all the wonders of magic are performed by will, imagination and faith. Sound familiar to the quote from Season 2 "imagination is more important than knowledge" doesn't it? It is essentially the tenent to which Druid magic adheres too.

If Lydia isn't a Druid then what the hell is going on?

Peter was dead and was able to communicate with her because he had a link because of the bite but now other spirits or things are using Lydia. Trying to communicate a message, perhaps taking her to the crime scene and sending her symbols in the hope that she'll figure out what is going on.

As a matter of fact Lydia isn't the only one to draw a something of potential significance without knowing why they did it. In 3x01 Scott got a Tattoo and when asked what it meant he said:

Scott: I don't know just something I trace with my fingers.

We know from spoilers that the reason Scott gave for the tattoo i.e. as a reward for not talking to Allison all summer isn't the truth and that we will learn what it really means in 3x12.

I am wondering if it's something that came to Scott in the same manner that the tree came to Lydia as the shamanic chanting has been associated with Scott scenes as well- he might not be able to hear it but we the audience can. Also of particular note is the promo where Scott  drowns himself to the sound of the chant.  

In addition Scott is also connected to trees (note that in the promo his drowned self sinks past what looks likes some tree roots). In the new title credits he is seen floating upwards in some mist past tree branches.

Also there is a tree at the end of the title credits too.

Jeff Davis said in a recent Q&A session that if you had connected the tree Lydia was drawing to the tree in the credits then you were paying attention to the right details. So this is confirmation that these things are important but not how.

Well trees are important in Celtic mythology. For instance mountain ash comes from the Rowan tree and has magical properties in Teen Wolf and the symbol used to mark the jar containing it, Luis, came from the Ogham alphabet where every letter (give or take) is associated with a particular tree.

The Oak tree was the most sacred of trees to the Celts and it’s name in the Ogham alphabet is Duir which means door. Intriguing when the episode name for 3x04 was Unleashed. Has something been unleashed through a door?

Also the Oak trees roots mirror that of it’s branches underground and were considered a door to The Otherworld. So I guess we can't be completely sure if Lydia was drawing branches or roots as if they were 'branches' they were bare.

I've peered closely at the trees in the opening credits and the one that Scott is floating past has leaves but the one at the end of the credits I'm not so sure about. I am trying to decided of the things dotted around it are leaves that have blown off or if behind the bare branches there is in fact another tree that has lots of leaves. Honestly I might be seeing things at this point. I really don't have much of an idea as to what this all means but to hazard a guess. The tree is representative of the axis mundi and offers a connection between two worlds, realms or dimensions. The axis mundi isn't always represented by a plant but it is not uncommon especially in the Indo-European traditions. This includes Celtic, Norse and Vedic mythology.

Of special interest is the fact that Scott's tattoo can be a symbolic representation of the axis mundi as it is like a pole with the realm inside the inner circle, the middle realm between the two circles and the outer realm outside the larger circle. What these realms actually are is more open to interpretation at this point but it could be something like earth, sea, sky which are the realms of the Gods in Celtic Mythology and the means by which you can travel to The Otherworld.

It might also explain why the human sacrifices have mostly been tied to trees as the tree serves as a way for the sacrifice to 'get' to where it's supposed to be going if the tree acts as a passage between worlds.  The fact that this is all connected to Scott in some ways makes me think that maybe he is going to travel to The Otherworld and Lydia will help him. This might be what the spoilers have hinted at about to do with the two of them.

Mythology of 3x04 Unleashed : Lydia

Part 2: The one where Lydia auditions for a part in Memento.

In the last episode 3x04 Lydia had missing time again and found herself in the middle of a music class that she wasn't supposed to be in. Now interestingly throughout history,  cultures have sought to generate trance-like states using music with short, repeated phrases and a hypnotic beat, so that time seems to slow down or stop. This is called a binaural beat and Celtic chanting contains it and this kind of chanting is what was recorded on the phone when the music teacher was taken. Did Lydia understand what they were saying?

There is also a Gaelic word, cumhacht, which means power and influence of the magical variety. This influence was also ascribed to the effect that the Ogham consonants had upon each other when chanting verse. The linking of one beginning word sound to another, modified the word endings and changed (or "reshaped") the meanings and/or effect of the words themselves. From such an association of likeness or similarity, comes the power of sounds, names, and incantations, to affect the shape of reality [1].

This actually reminds me for some reason of what Peter said at the end of Season 2. "There is a myth that you can cure a werewolf simply by calling out it's Christian name" and "sometimes myths and legends bare a hint of truth." The power of a name. Lydia's reaction to the chanting certainly seems to indicate that it meant something to her so  I guess the real question is why didn't she say anything to Deaton or Stiles? It's possible that maybe the chanting related directly to her and she want's to know what it means first. Although she did let Deaton have a copy of it!! I can't wait to find out what it means!!!

I though that there was a possibility that Lydia was committing the murders and just didn't know because someone could be acting through her. Maybe she arrived in the music class earlier, kidnapped the music teacher and then sat down to draw. However she was around people when Harris was taken so does this let her off the hook?

Mythology of 3x04 'Unleashed' : Deucalion

Part 1: The one where Deucalion wants to become ruler of the Universe.

"I am the Alpha of Alphas. I am the apex of apex predators. I am death, destroyers of worlds. I am the Demon Wolf."

Robert Oppenheimer after the first atomic bomb was detonated remarked "Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds." He was actually quoting from the Bhagavad Gita which is Hindu Scripture and is seen as an allegory for the ethical and moral struggles within us all. Something the characters of Teen Wolf can relate too.

The phrase is uttered by Krishna in the text and translations vary but in essence he said:

"I am Time, Kala, supreme destroyer of the three worlds, here visible in the three worlds. Even if you refuse to fight, none of these soldiers will live."

So Shiva is the form that is the destroyer of worlds. Interestingly Shiva is also depicted in stories as having a 'third eye' that when he is angry opens and shoots a missile of fire that can turn a person to ash. This is interesting considering when Deucalion was being a diva making this proclamation about being the Alpha of Alphas etc. He roared, he got angry and he shattered his glasses. Very much like something shot out of his eyes and broke the lenses!!! 

Also, Kali, another one of the Alphas,  is the name of a Hindu God. In fact she is sometimes called the 'devourer of worlds' and is often considered the consort to Vishnu or in some cases is another aspect of him since her name comes from Kala the same as Shiva's.

In addition to this The Demon Wolf in mythology could be the Norse God Fenrir. He is tied to a prophecy that states that a wolf and his family would one  day destroy the world. Fenrir was chased, caught, and locked into a cage to  avoid the catastrophe.

While on the topic of Norse mythology it may be worth noting that Deucalion in some ways could also represent Odin, Thor and Fenrir. Odin sacrificed his eye i.e. his sight for knowledge, Thor is associated with thunder and lightening and Fenrir is the Demon wolf.

Now lets quickly turn to look at the first part of what Deucalion said. "I am the Alpha of Alphas" and "I am the apex of apex predators". The first part seems self explanatory. He is the leader of the Alpha pack but it is interesting because unlike in a regular pack he didn't make any of them they aren't his Beta's and we know that there is usually a bond between an Alpha and the wolves that they turn.

Derek: It has to be you. You have a connection with him a link that you can't understand.

So what is tying these Alpha's together? It's a mystery.

As to being the apex of apex predators. In the real world wolves are considered apex predators because nothing hunts them but wolves are genetically encoded to rise up the pack hierarchy and have on occasion been recorded to rebel against and kill their parents so they can hunt each other. However in the world of Teen Wolf I can't help but wonder if this is a little bit of a boast because this is a world of supernatural creatures and if Decualion is to be believed then none of them hunt him.

Originally , and I don't know if this has subsequently changed due to Colton Haynes leaving the show (probably), but the Alpha pack were supposed to have come to Beacon Hills because of the word of a Kanima. Now the Kanima could paralyze with a single scratch and I'm supposed to believe that werewolves are the apex predator? In addition there is an interesting thing about the Kanima.

Remember in Season 2 when Erica got slashed by the Kanima in the library? She had a full on epileptic seizure even though becoming a werewolf was suppose to have healed her of that particular affliction. So the Kanima could disable, paralyze even, a werewolf's ability to heal - make them vulnerable and I wonder if this is linked to Deucalion's blindness somehow? Although I do like the other theory floating around about Deucalion being the friend of Chris Argent that he shot in the head.

So there we have it. Deucalion has named himself death and the destroyer of worlds and used various mythology from across cultures to do so *eyeroll*. He has also bonded a group of Alpha's to him by some means while we all sit around going "dude can't you tell he plans on killing you all to grow to power of epic proportions". Maybe they know this...

There is a supposed connection between Vishnu and the Celtic God of the sea called Manannan who has three legs comparable to the three strides of Vishnu.

In fact the symbol for Manannan is a triskelion like that for the Alpha pack. O___O

  Manannan is the guardian of gates to The Otherworld in Celtic Mythology and also has strong ties to the weather and the mists between worlds plus healing and regeneration. Perhaps Deucalion is looking to heal his sight?

In 3x04 'Unleashed' Derek says to Deucalion:

"I know you. I know what you are; you are a fanatic!"

So Deucalion has an excessive single-minded zeal for a religious or political (werewolf) cause. It seems far more likely in this case that Derek meant a religious fanatic. As Deucalion has named himself after some impressive (and destructive) Gods.

Even the name Deucalion is connected to mythology and you do sort of have to wonder if it's his real name or a name he took  for dramatic flair. Deucalion was the son of Prometheus in Greek Mythology and as the story goes Lycaon, King of Arcadia offered Zeus a meal containing human flesh. Zeus was so appalled that he let loose a deluge that flooded everything. Deucalion, with the aid of his father Prometheus, was saved from the flood by a chest. Which is a parallel to the Biblical story of Noah.

It has been raining a lot so far this season and the weather has been emphasized in the show so is a huge storm and flood coming? Is this the Alpha packs plan? Um? Something to do with Manannan and a flood?

Also hold up? Lycaon? Would this be the same Lycaon as mentioned in research by Stiles in Season 1? Um yes it would.

Not only did Zeus send the flood but also apparently transformed Lycaon and his sons into wolves as punishment. Thus Lycaon is considered to be the first werewolf. It was Deucalion's job, in the myth, as survivor of the flood to repopulate the earth with his wife but they actually just threw rocks that became people so you know lala. It is clever how Jeff or I have whoopsies has linked a story about the origin of werewolves to Deucalion.

However, being the savior of the human race is quite at odds with being death and the destroyer of worlds isn't it? So what does this all mean? There is an interesting dualism here especially as one of the themes of this season so far can be considered morality.

Peter: Let Scott deal with it. Let him be the hero of his moral black and white world. Real survivors - you and I - we live in shades of grey.

The Celts did not share our dualistic thinking, we perceive reality as divided into two opposites like good and bad. To the Celts these distinctions only appeared on the surface of things. Their spirituality revolved around the number three – the surface dualities were combined into an interwoven whole. Balance and harmony in the universe is maintained by recognizing these polarities and negotiating a third, or middle path, between them [1].

Deaton: the Celtic druids were close to nature - they believed they kept it in balance.

Little is really known about Celtic practices and ritual because so little was documents but Celtic deities were often triplicates: either one god with three aspects or three gods with an aspect each like the Hindu Trimurti. The number three, groups of three, three-fold death. Threes threes everywhere threes.

Deaton: If a druid went down the wrong path, the wise oak was sometimes said to have become a dark oak.

This quote by Deaton indicates that there is a wrong path despite what the person following it might think. I think this might link to what Jeff Davis has said about who we consider the 'bad' characters this season not necessarily seeing themselves as evil.

It is almost like Deucalion sees himself in more than one role. That of the survivor and the protector of the species but also the destroyer. Maybe he thinks that everyone and everything must be destroyed to be reborn or something which would fit with him being a fanatic or maybe he just thinks the end of the world is coming and he plans on doing something. He is essentially the embodiment of the moral war that is forever going on inside of us all.

If the Alpha pack aren't the "something" that is coming maybe they are actually preparing to fight whatever it is.

I feel like Stiles.

Stiles: ...missing pretty much half the story here.

Although maybe all my research has clued us in a little more....or maybe not.

To summarize. Deucalion thinks that he is a God or the God. He wants all of the power for himself and he wants to drown the world and sail off in his little wooden chest boat. L.O.L no seriously though xkgjhslkjhglkdjf

3x04 Unleashed

it is a bit hard to enjoy a show when the main character annoys you to no end. they are pushing the idea of Scott being an Alpha down our throaths and I for one am so done with it. I was over it pretty much in the season premiere and it has only gone downhill from there. Though I have to say Scott, Isaac and Allison make a pretty interesting team. romantically I could get pretty much behind any combination. but I don't particulary care much in the first place so... it was good to see Boyd again. and I'm not sure about Cora yet. she seem to care for Derek but I'm really curious about her backstory. where was she? how long did she think Derek and Laura were dead? why did she come back? how did she meet the Alpha Pack? the Alpha Pack is weird. I'm getting the story line less and less. so they want Derek to kill his own Pack to gain strenght and join them. and in the process kill Scott who presents a potential threat to them? it's not a stupid plan but Derek would rather cut his own arm off than harm any of his Pack. he would make them hate him before actually hurting them. which BTW was a fucking heartbreaking scene. and Scott still insist on not being part of Derek's Pack so there is that. maybe it's just total bias on my part but Jennifer reminded me a lot of Stiles in her scene with Derek. not sure if it is good or bad yet but I find it interesting. seems like the creators of the show just love to hurt Isaac and Derek and emotionally torture Stiles. I'm not finding it funny. or entertaining. so please stop. Stiles, Lydia and Deaton working together is good, and while I have not thought of it, they did sort of split into 3 groups of 3. I wonder whether it will be significant for the plot. Alpha Alpha was intriguing up until the point he started to sound a little too full of himself. Barefoot Amazon seems a few short marbles short and Vin Diesel is there for the one liners, apparently. and the shirtless twins are too much of a couple of puppies to be believable Alphas, TBH. it was an interesting episode, it did further the plot and presented more questions but I wish they woudl all get the fuck overthemselves and work together for once. is that so much to ask?
