9-1-1 s02e01 -> s09e18
this is a generalization of course but it is fun how often buck has extremely valid emotions and concerns that he doesn't have the framework to articulate or present it properly so it comes out like he's being dramatic/crashing out over nothing which feeds into how people feel the need to 'handle' him or treat him with kid gloves when that's not really what he wants or needs, which makes him question if maybe he IS overreacting over nothing, even though he generally has a pretty strong handle on when he feels like something is wrong. whereas eddie often reacts to things disproportionately and with underlying emotions that would kill an average therapist where they stand but he's really good at boxing all the harsher edges of himself away and going about things so even-keeled-y that everyone assumes that there must be some good reason he's doing the things he does and they're just not in the know, so people just leave him to handle his own shit (which is what he says he wants) which just validate's eddie's internal justifications in his own insane decisions.
#and buck tries SO hard to believe when others tell him nothing is wrong#but he has a very strong sense of self so he's always fighting internally about it#and eddie's like yay. now i can do insane shit. and everyone claps.

Oliver Stark as Evan "Buck" Buckley in 9-1-1: War every episode series: 9-1-1
I get kinda sick of people who bash Buck for fostering Theo because they think he quote "throws his first family away" meaning Chris and Eddie and honestly I think they have a point about Buck feeling left out of Diaz family now that Chris is older BUT
Eddie is the one in charge of the dynamics here. he's Christopher's dad and it was his choice to let Buck become their support system and be more than just Dad's friend to his son. Just like it was his choice not to acknowledge it in any way except the will but that is for a situation where Eddie himself is not part of the equation anymore to the point that Buck didn't consider himself a part of the team anymore.
it started back in s8 when Eddie moved away to Texas. the whole "everything that matters is in Texas" was not just a silly line. Buck took it seriously and I think to this day hadn't let go of that. I'm sure he still thinks that the only priority Eddie has is Chris, that's the immediate family and Buck has no place there.
what pisses me off is that people don't seem to acknowledge that it's Eddie's responsibility to set boundaries in his family, and it was his call to not label Buck's role in Christopher's life. Could you really blame Buck for trying to create his own family when the person he dedicated half of the last 8 years to said "everything that matters is in Texas" and got mad at Buck having a problem with it?
#buck lives in this weird limbo where he’s more than dad's friend to christopher but not exactly his father or stepfather#buck doesn't know where he fits in the diaz family#it's up to eddie to tell him in no uncertain terms#until then he has the right to try and create his own family
