On August 4, 1933, the New York Stock Exchange was evacuated when a tear gas bomb went off in the ventilation system. As the gas reached the lobby it was expanded by heat, and the effects were felt immediately. Eugene S. Daniell, Jr., founder of the National Independent Party, was later convicted of third-degree assault.

In the early afternoon of August 4, 1933, a cylinder of tear gas was put in the ventilation system of the NY Stock Exchange. The building was evacuated and business was shut down. Crowds of Stock Exchange workers and the curious gathered in front of the Stock Exchange building at the corner of Wall and Broad Streets. No one was seriously injured.

Eve Curie, a writer, journalist, pianist, and a daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie, became the millionth visitor to view the exhibition of war weapons when she visited the display at the Chrysler Building on August 4, 1943. Eve Curie left her native France when the Nazis invaded and was active in the French Resistance in London. She later married an American and lived in New York until her death in 2007, at age 102.
