When I started reading Shadow and Bone, I already knew a lot about what was going to happen. Why? Because my local library bought King of Scars before buying the Shadow and Bone triology, and I couldn't resist reading it, even though I hadn't read this one before. Do I regret it? Not at all. 

In Shadow and Bone, Alina Starkov, a young cartographer in the army of the Czar of Ravka, is supposed to cross the Shadow Fold - a sea of darkness, filled with monsters. In an accident, she discovers her long-hidden powers: she is a Grisha, which means that she has magic abilities, and not just any magic abilities - Alina is a sun summoner, the only one. Suddenly, her life turns upside down. She is brought to the Little Palace and meets the Darkling, the most powerful Grisha of all time, who seems to be quite interested in her. But soon, she discovers that she doesn't only have to fear for foreign spies and murderers that could try to hunt her down, but that there are people who would like to use her powers to their advantage right next to her...

Even though I already knew who would turn out to be the villain of the story, I still realized how I started to like them, and I couldn't help it. That really shows us how well it is written, doesn't it? A good villain has to be likeable, in my opinion, otherwise we can't see his motivation.

Another thing that really got me was the friendship between Alina and Genya. Of course, the one with Mal was nice, too, but they always have that kind of romantic tension, and we don't find it between Genya and Alina - even though Alinas multiple remarks on Genyas beauty and her comments on Genya being in love with David make it seem as if Alina might not be that straight, but that is not the kind of discussion I want to start here. We see their friendship bloom just shortly after they met, they really have some platonic friendship chemistry that Leigh Bardugo managed to write super well. In my opinion, we rarely see well-portrayed friendships in Young Adult Fantasy, and the scenes with the two girls together really were some of my favorites.

The writing style in general was good, of course, that's how we know Leigh Bardugo. We do see a difference to her later books, though, and I personally find it super interesting to compare them to each other.

Alinas romantic feelings were ok, in my opinion. I am not a big fan of the common YA Fantasy trope that the romance somehow seems to become the most important aspect of book. It was fine in Shadow and Bone, but sometimes it got a bit too much. Especially the fact that Alina herself feels very unsure about how she feels, but can't decide to not have a partner at all.

What bothered me most, though, was the quite cliché ending. I will not give any spoilers, but when you think of something like "the power of love will save us", you sadly are not too far away from the truth. For me, that really is too much, but I can imagine that others might like it.

I will award Shadow and Bone with 4 points. I really couldn't put it away after I started, and I especially loved the friendship between Genya and Alina, but really, the cliché romance and ending were a bit too much for me to give 5 points. But all in all, a very good book, which I would absolutely recommend for every YA Fantasy fan.

Breaking News: Governor Emmanuel - Senator Akpabio commissioned uncompleted building and called it 4 Points Sheraton Hotel

Udom Emmanuel, governor of Akwa Ibom state, says his achievements in office shows that he is not a mistake.

He said this while responding to Godswill Akpabio, his predecessor, who described him as a mistake that must be rejected in 2019.

Akpabio who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), said this at a rally in Ikot Ekpene.

Responding through Charles Udoh, his commissioner of information, the governor said Akpabio has mortgaged his conscience and is now attempting to deceive Akwa Ibom people.

“A governor that records the achievements despite the challenges of an epileptic national economy cannot be a mistake,” Udoh said.

“I doubt if there is any first term governor in Nigeria who has recorded this level of achievement. Godswill Akpabio spent eight years as commissioner under Obong Attah; spent eight years as governor at the height of the state’s income receipts from the federal government yet he couldn’t complete Uyo-Ikot Ekpene road (the road to his village) despite appropriating almost all the sums budgeted for the project.

“Godswill also commissioned an uncompleted building with rented furniture and fitting and called it 4 Points Sheraton Hotel. Udom has, as at today, facilitated the setting up of more than nine industries in just three years; Godswill spent eight years with zero industry

“It’s unfortunate that Akpabio has mortgaged his conscience and is now attempting to deceive Akwa Ibom people. Akwa Ibom people are wiser.”
