INTERVIEW: NARDWUAR x DRAKE & 40
Aaliyah : cancelled posthumous album
Lots of rumours have been going around in the last few years about a future post-humous album of R&B singer Aaliyah. Anybody could think “What for? It’s not like she’s been singing something new lately...”. Well, obviously she hasn’t, but the curious thing is that every year one or two “new” uncompleted songs of her are being released by this one or another, and rapper Drake is being criticised by Timbaland, Missy and (most of all) DMX because he was up working on an Aaliyah’s album, and although the singer’s brother doesn’t want to know about it and Missy and Timbaland are totally against it (I guess the real problem was that they weren’t called to collaborate nor even informed about it), the fact is that Aaliyah’s uncle must have a reason why he’s shared this material with Drake... But why not with Missy and Timbaland? They were the ones in the music industry Aaliyah was most close with.
The project was already pretty much planned. It would have 16 tracks, mainly composed by fragments of songs music producer Noah “40″ Shebib would arrange and complete. This was at the request of Aaliyah’s uncle himself. Drake joined the project later after asking Shebib for permission. I think that was the beginning of the end. Drake was an uninvited collaborator.
Here the album cover CEO Barry Hankerson from Blackground Records published on Twitter in 2012. The album was due to be released in one year.
40 is a music producer and songwriter but I don’t think he had originally thought about accompanying Aaliyah’s voice with someone else’s. After Drake published “Enough said” the critics started. I must say he’s not a very respected artist in the R&B and HipHop industry. He doesn’t sing well and his rap is normally quite loose (as Aaliyah would say). Maybe it’s because there are some artists who atract more hate than others although they are not worse than them. (e.g.: Nicolas Cage is the most hated actor in the world, but not the worst).
The main thing is: If another voice other than Aaliyah’s must be heard on the album, that should be Timbaland’s and Missy’s, but not Drake’s. If you collaborate to make a posthumous album with unreleased material from another person you don’t take that opportunity to make an album for yourself. And it seems that Drake had planned to rap on all songs (I personally think I couldn’t endure it).
It’s very disappointing to know now that the album will not be released after 40 gave up to the pressure and Aaliyah’s mother saying she didn’t “want that out”. I really believe if Drake hadn’t had a hand on the project, 40 would have go on with it. He would have been more discreet about it and surely more respectful with the manipulation of the material. I mean, 16 tracks is a lot! How many songs had Blackground hidden?
I would very much like to see another album with Aaliyah’s unreleased songs. I don’t think it would be so offensive if it was arranged by artists she admired and worked with. As long as all benefits of the album were directed to social causes Aaliyah supported in life, I think it would be a very well-received work, maybe even by her family.
What do you think, fans of Aaliyah?
Drake Signs With ASCAP
Drake has signed with ASCAP, the company’s VP of Rhythm & Soul Membership, Nicole George-Middleton, told Billboard exclusively today.
"For me, a big part of making music is getting the opportunity to work with people I love, trust and respect," Drake says. "As an organization run by music creators, ASCAP represents a whole community of kindred spirits. Joining ASCAP was just a natural choice for me because I know my music is in the best possible hands."
Drake is joining a roster that includes his longtime friend and producer, Noah "40" Shebib. He had previously been with BMI.
"We are really excited to build on our longstanding relationship with Drake’s team," George-Middleton added. "Working from the beginning with his collaborators Noah '40' Shebib and Boi-1da, it felt only right to have Drake join the ASCAP family."
"We're thrilled to now officially count Drake among our many multi-talented members," ASCAP EVP of Membership Randy Grimmett stated. "This new addition only strengthens ASCAP's reputation as home to the world's greatest songwriters. We can't wait to see what's to come for Drake in the future."
Drake is currently working on his third studio album, "Nothing Was the Same." The album's first single, "Started From the Bottom," currently sits at No. 3 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and at No. 2 on Rap Songs.
