The use of social media in Oman
Sep 26, 2017
written by: Arwa Al Khayari
Social media start being effective recently, were Omanis go towards open accounts in social media like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, and Snapchat. Gulf countries describe Omani users that they are silent and quiet, but what we see it now there is a big number of Omani users and they are participating continuously in social media.
The positive side of that is Omanis find an area to have freedom in writing and express their views and feelings, during the limited freedom in traditional media.
Also, most organization and companies have social media accounts, to contact with costumers and attract more followers to their products. Even media organization like newspapers and radio stations have accounts to publish the news.
Omanis users change decisions by social media, were they create a public opinion for society issues. And that push responsible organization to make change and doing the requirements of people. For example, the Omanis are anger at a video that spread in social media about someone destructing of green pastures in Salalah by his car, which prompted the police to arrest the accused because of discontent of users.
On the other hand, social media in Oman have negative side, were many users specially women go towards trading via Instagram or Twitter, where many accounts sell unlicensed products on the market and hurts buyers, especially cosmetics and make-up products. Also, some accounts are just for fraud.
Also, some users only target fame, since they do not have any meaningful content to offer to followers. For example, models display their images only and promote certain products such as cosmetics surgery and e-shopping.
Rumors are another negative aspect for social media. Also insult, ridicule and deal poorly with users.
I Suggest that Omani users still need to know the right way to activate their social accounts, in a way that ensures meaningful content to audience.
