Upgrading from the campervan...
After our night sleeping in Christchurch airport we were excited to be on the plane heading to a warmer climate. Little did we know quite how warm it would be. As we landed at 7:30am the thermometer was already showing over 30 degrees! We grabbed our bags and headed to the hostel where we felt right at home - above an Irish pub! We couldn't check in till the afternoon so decided we'd make the most of the weather and go to the beach. It didn't look too far on the map but one of the girls at the hostel warned is against walking. Once we got back outside we understood why - the mercury had hit 42 degrees! We hopped on the tram to St. Kilda where we saw Luna Park, with all it's roller coasters, and stopped for lunch in one of the many cafés. It was a little too hot for us down at the beach so we grabbed some fro-yo and set off back to the hostel. Stupidly this time we decided to walk and were absolutely knackered by the time we hit Albert Park (only half way home!). By the time we'd got back we were both a sweaty mess and spent the evening chilling, trying to cool ourselves down. The next morning it was time for our treat. A nice hotel in central Melbourne courtesy of hotel points we'd collected through work. When we rocked up, our backpacks got a few strange looks. We're obviously not the usual clientele! We decided to make the most of the free concierge service while we waited for our room and quizzed him on all things Melbourne. This included the Australian Open, for which we were trying to get tickets. We were hoping to just get ground passes but when we were offered centre court tickets for that evening we reconsidered our options. After viewing the lineup and realising we'd be seeing Andy Murray play we were sold - off to the tennis we went! We spent the afternoon wandering and grabbed a $2 pizza for lunch (bargain!) before heading back to the hotel where we were told our bags were in our room. 20 minutes after finding out the bags weren't in our room and calling concierge to bring them up, we were still waiting. By this point we were rushing as we needed to get to the tennis and let this be known. Little did we know this would lead to a complimentary bottle of wine along with the offer of a free lift to the tennis with the hotel manager - being a gold member pays off!! Off we set to the Melbourne Olympic Park excited for some tennis action. When we arrived we found that the games had been delayed, as expected, due to the heat. We grabbed a cold beer and a beanbag and set up shop to watch the Nadal and Federer games on the big screen. Around 8pm we headed to the Rod Lever arena to watch the first of the two games for the evening. We'd been so distracted by the excitement of seeing Murray play that we'd completely overlooked the fact that we were seeing Azarenka in the ladies game beforehand. Being the winner from the previous two years we were in for a good game. The ladies didn't disappoint and the underdog nearly pushed it into a third set with the crowd backing her the whole way. Next up was Murray vs Millot. We were quite excited and had even had our faces painted for the event. We were still amazed at the seats we had, so close to the action! Murray came out fighting strong and it was a cracking game. The atmosphere in the crowd was fantastic with one group of lads singing Andy Murray themed tunes every so often - very amusing. The game looked to be heading to a fourth set when Murray pulled it back and won the game in straight sets. After he'd done the compulsory interview we joined the crowd to try and get an autograph. Carly stuck a piece of paper over the wall and success, we got one. As we couldn't share it Carly stuck another piece of paper over the wall for a second attempt. Woop! We got a second one. Apparently he doesn't leave the court until he has signed everything which is so nice! As it was nearly 1am, we started to head for the tram back to the hotel. En route we noticed another game going on on an outside court so thought we'd have a quick look. We couldn't believe our luck when we saw Del Potro playing! We grabbed a chair and settled in for a few games. We didn't catch the end of the match and as we left it was a close call as to who would win. We decided to find out the result the following morning and headed off to bed.
I hate when people tell me it's not cold or I'm not cold
