exploding

as he writes, whittling pencils with his knife

to make a point.

A warm mist

lifts

to the ceiling,

foot wide beams

half rotted

but sturdier than his memory of

how to cook

the blasted stew his mother once made

oft years ago

when he was nine

and didn't need to keep a handgun in the bedside drawer.

College Au short

Luke collapses face first on the first bed he sees, kicking the door shut behind him as he falls. His legs are so exhausted from all the back and forth across campus that it was all he could do to walk the last few steps to his room. His feet are hot with the pain and, groaning, he kicks off his shoes and buries his face in the pillow.

The room is mysteriously empty of his roommate, but if he strains his ears he can hear Jonathan's unmistakable laugh echoing from down the hallway. Probably accompanying Craig on another early morning (midnight) coffee run.

Jonathan rarely leaves his room still; the light from his computer even now is still flickering, casting shadows across the ceiling, as unattended as it is. But when he does it's always on some coffee adventure with Craig. The two of them seem to have become inseparable between the hours of midnight and four am (when Craig usually passes out from lack of sleep and has to be dragged to his early morning classes by Evan).

"Come rub my feet," he mutters, but there is no answer. Too tired, he begins to fall asleep, the lullaby of crickets chirping from outside the cracked open window and the distant patter of feet running down the hallway soothes his mind.

When he wakes the first rays of sunlight have already begun to lighten the shadows of the room and brighten the back of his weary eyes, forcing them open. His eyes and body are both still heavy with fatigue and protest his waking, four hours isn't nearly enough for a decent night's rest, but the steady pressure at his feet is impossible to miss.

Delirious: Go get me some guns and uh.. what's manly? Cartoonz: Uh.. beards? Delirious: Yeah get me some beards. Cartoonz: Ok I'll go to the beard store and buy you a beard.

"I.. there's something I've always wanted to say," Delirious starts, rubbing the back of his thumb as he talks, an unconscious habit that keeps his hands busy while his mouth tries to form the words he wants to say.

"What is it?" Mini asks, expecting to hear ‘You had some noodles stuck between your teeth all day', or something of the like. Something embarrassing he didn’t even realize was happening.

But instead what hits his ears is, "I like your ass."

"Excuse me?" He chirps, and grabs at the back of his pants, trying and failing to find the tear in his jeans that Delirious must be talking about. "You do what now?"

Delirious just laughs at him. "Hell yeah, you wanna go get a blowjob later?" All bravado and wide smiles beneath still red cheeks.

"A.. blow job?" Mini asks, his face quickly turning red as the dots begin to connect and the ‘must be a joke’‘ finally falls from his mind. "From who..?"

Delirious just winks at him, slow and purposefully.

"I mean, FOR who, what, I mean..?" Mini licks his lips trying to think. But his mind is filled with mental images that torment him. And all he can see is Delirious kneeling before him, still with that same devilish grin on his face. Hair falling across the other boy’s eyes, as one hand slowly pulls down his zipper.

"I.. I'm .. I mean uh." Shifting where he stands, the legs of his pants have become uncomfortably tight, having shrunk in the last few seconds.

"Should we do it here, or you wanna go behind the building?" Delirious laughs again, and nudges Mini with his shoulder. Standing so close, his warm breath brushes across Mini’s cheek and makes him blush the harder.

“Sweets?” Mini asks, holding the open box Delirious thrust into his hands the moment they laid eyes on each other. “But why?”

“Because I know you’re secretly allergic to chocolate and I want to watch you die,” Delirious retorts, rolling his eyes and making such an exaggerated motion of it, that a child in a school play would have been proud of him.

Mini opens his mouth. “Ah–”

Delirious just covers his face with his hands and speaks through it, mournfully. “I want to date you, idiot. I want to hold your hand and take you somewhere fancy to eat, at some place where they have flowers on the tables.”

Peeking out from between his fingers, he stops to ask as the thought hits. “You’re not.. actually allergic to chocolate are you..?”

“No,” Mini starts to grin. “But I am allergic to being called an idiot.”

“But you’ll say yes?” Delirious perks up, hopeful.

Mini wants to say one thing, but his mind has already caught on something else. “Wait, are you asking me on a date, or for my hand in marriage?!”

“The answer is yes, I accept!” Delirious blurts out, and grabs him in a tight hug, almost knocking the chocolates out of Mini’s hands.

The night seems to go on forever. In either direction they look it hangs there, heavy and oppressive, over the streetlamps.

Remnants of the day stick to the back of their heels, dragging down the soles of their feet as they take the long way home.

Luke, his hands in his pockets, slouches as he walks. His legs are longer, so he moves slower.

Jonathan rubs the ear of his newly acquired teddy bear, too preoccupied with memorizing the feel of it to watch where his steps land.

The sidewalk turns on its side, crooked tiles half buried in the dirt and half raised to the heavens, roots from the tree beside it knocking it further off inch by inch, day by day.

Jonathan misses his step, and catches himself on Luke, as his sneaker slips on the stone, he grabs Luke’s shoulder to hold onto for support.

Luke stops and sticks his elbow out, leaving room for Jonathan to slip an arm in around his own.

His bones are heavy beneath his clothes, weary from the day and so ready for sleep. And the way home seems to grow longer in every step.

Jonathan leans on him, holding firmly to Luke’s arm, and talks softly of all the things they’ve done that day.

The air is still thick and muggy, almost stagnant with the soft green glow that lingers still. The harsh sounds of a thousand insects filter through the brush surrounding them, hiding them.

“How’s your leg?” Delirious asks, kneeling down at the base of the old tree Cartoonz has wedged himself into.

The canopy of branches and thick vines above them block out much of the light. Nestled deep into the hole the tree’s roots form, Cartoonz’s face is but a shadow.

“Hurts,” he mutters, rubbing at his pants leg.

A screech alarms from somewhere behind them, softly-pitched (but sharp in their ears as they both flinch away), and far too close for comfort.

Delirious’ face twists and he nudges Cartoonz’s leg lightly. “Scoot over.”

“There’s not room for two of us here!” Cartoonz hisses back, but wedges himself further into the roots, as far back as he can go. His shoulder pinched between the brambles into a cramp as Delirious presses closer.

One hand on Cartoonz’s knee, carefully away from the deep gash just below it, Delirous whispers into Cartoonz’s ear. “They won’t find us if we just keep still. Be quiet.”

Cartoonz’s mouth moves, wanting to form words, but he only swears in his head, the hand not pinched by Delirious seeking silently through the roots for a fallen branch to defend with.

Delirious unhooks his belt, and slips it off. Tying it quickly around his right fist as he waits, cramped as a rat in the den with Cartoonz.
