They're adorable.

It's perfectly fine.

I've never read in depth on the subject beyond my zoology textbook in high school so I don't have any personal recommendations to give you

A quick Google search on scientific name or binomial nomenclature is a good start (I did that myself when I wrote my post actually, to make sure my information was up to date).

I did some looking for books and I did find a particularly interesting title that I've added to my to read list: The Art of Naming by Michael Ohl. Probably could find other books on the subject using Amazon's recommendations system.
