A wider view. There is a dark streak on the left at the base of the hill -- it's actually up pretty high from the next road. This is Foothill Boulevard -- not an actual boulevard in this stretch, it's one lane in each direction. The lanes next to it are freeway lanes specifically for trucks. Trucks are required to take the truck lanes, but cars can take them too. There are truck lanes on the right as well.
A bit more width. Landfill at upper left, Reservoir at top rightish. Very top in the haze is Los Angeles city and the Hollywood/Santa Monica Hills. While the bulk of the concrete is freeway, there are a couple of roads that pass through this pass as well.
5 and 14 freeways interchange in Los Angeles County. Exiting the top of the picture, (to the south) is the 5 freeway. Lanes veering off to the lower left (mostly northbound) are going to/coming from the 14 freeway which originates here. Lanes exiting lower right are heading northwest to Santa Clarita and eventually northern California.
This is what we came for. 5 freeway on the right, swooping in between hills. The Van Norman Reservoir, middle supplies much of the water for Los Angeles City and County, and the San Fernando Valley behind it.
Western tip of the San Gabriel Mountains. Topa-Topa mountains in the distance, probably Santa Susana mountains on the far left. The orange ball on the left is a visibility marker on high power lines to make them easier to hit should we get in to a shooting war with Canada. These two pictures were taken exactly 30 minutes apart. The top as I arrived to this spot, the bottom as I left.
