The best stand up comedy rapper out of Michigan will hardly surprise anybody with his new tape. How Ironic is exactly like the last one, and the one before that.
Previously known for his wildest freestyles and catchiest lines, Cash Kidd was tunneling childish energy into laugh out loud (and sometimes silly) songs on his first mixtapes. Later, his music became more rounded, less spontaneous but still funny, memorable and naughty. Circa 2021 Cash Kidd found a blueprint he repeated since then on his later CDs. How Ironic is too dry for the old fans to be enthused about.
The album follows older records so closely one can hardly see the difference between this new one and Created Player (2004), No Socks 3 (2003) and even BeBe Kidd 3 (2003). A couple of star guests appearances (this time it’s Big Sad 1900 and BlueBucksClan)? Check. A couple of songs with Cash Kidd singing? Check. A few no name male singers? Check. Oral sex jokes? Check. Dork jokes? Check. Alex Kure, Anton the Producer, DaMazin and Damedot on the beat? Check. And on and on and on.
Wу only get a glimpse of the old Marc on the three songs here: “Dork!” where Cash Kidd has a good chemistry with like-minded MCs HBK and DaBoii; “Autopay” with Big Sad 1900; and “Not Like Marc” on which Cash Kidd is freestyling his ass off like in the good old days, joking almost in every line:
When it come to cheese, boy, you poor like a nacho stand
Need some new haters, my old ones startin' to act like some fans
Or:
I just dropped a blunt on purpose, boy, I'm gettin' filthy rich
Revoke his P membership, these niggas tender dicks
(Not Like Marc)
The rest of the songs are either awkward remakes of his old songs or autotuned, silly poppish adventures in R&B.
How ironic that the rapper who started as one of the most unpredictable artists turned into a by the book artist during less than a dozen years span.
