Holding Pattern

As soon as the pilot finished his sentence that we were currently at risk of colliding with another airplane due to poor visibility as a result of recent forrest fires, the plane sank in the sky and with it my stomach. I thought of my parents first when my hands began to shake. I thought of how I broke my one rule of telling you that I love you before every flight and that this was somehow my punishment for that. The sweat of my lower back ran ice cold and I opened my phone. I didn’t text them, nor you, and I didn’t sift through the memories of our conversations like I would’ve guessed I’d do in any similar situation, rather I opened up my voice memos app and I listened to the most recent song I recorded. I thought of how if the plane were to crash that all of my music, all of my thoughts, ideas and feelings would disappear forever. The thought of having nothing left to show after I die frightened me more than severe turbulence or the risk of mid-air collisions ever could. In my utmost time of need, it was my own music that provided the way out. And when I stepped off the airplane with shaky legs and a tired mind, I thanked the higher being of my understanding for a reminder of where my priorities need to be.
