The tallest office and residential buildings in NYC have topped out! Central Park Tower, the ultra-luxury, super-slender residential tower on 57th Street reached its final height of 1,500 feet, making it the tallest residential building in the world. Just to the east, One Vanderbilt, the supertall office building adjacent to Grand Central has also topped out, now waiting for its spire to be installed, which will bring the skyscraper to 1,401 feet. One Vanderbilt is contributing $220 million to transit upgrades, including a new station for the 4,5,6 subway that will accommodate 4,000 to 6,000 more subway passengers per hour. Additionally, Vanderbilt Ave between 42nd and 43rd will be pedestrian-only, helping to make better pedestrian access to Grand Central. The skyscrapers represent the new wave of construction that has swept the city over the past several years and has shown little signs of slowing down. Currently, there are three chart-topping skyscrapers proposed, one of which, Tower Fifth, would take the crown from Central Park Tower, currently the highest roof in the Western Hemisphere. There are currently 25 skyscrapers over 750 feet tall that are proposed or under construction in New York City. What do you think of the new skyscrapers? Will the boom in construction continue or will we see a slowdown in the coming years? We’d like to be the first to wish a happy 92nd birthday to artist Alex Katz, born on July 24, 1927 in New York City! We’re celebrating his newly installed artwork “Metropolitan Faces” at the 57th Street (F) station in Manhattan. “Metropolitan Faces” incorporates Katz’s iconic brightly colored and bold portraits and flowers rendered with an economy of detail in his signature style. Nineteen hand painted large glass panels (fabricated by Glasmaleri Peters) fill the station with light and color through the faces that reflect those of commuters, while his lush floral compositions are a nod to nearby Central Park. Commenting on the public permanent installation, the artist and subway rider said, “It is a privilege to make art for all people”. The lengthy station mezzanine, constructed in the late 1960’s, provides a unique setting within the subway system to see art. The series of paintings are set within cast stone panels that line the station walls, becoming part of the city’s art infrastructure.

111 West 57th Street, the most slender skyscraper in the world and currently the second tallest building in New York City (by roof height) has topped out its concrete superstructure. The terra cotta and bronze skyscraper, designed by @shoparchitects and developed by @jdsdevelopmentgroup, is a refreshing addition to the skyline that has been crowded with all glass towers over the last several years. The skyscraper has a 1-to-23 slender ratio, meaning it is 23 times taller than it is base. The Twin Towers, for example, had a 1-to-7 slender ratio! When it is completed, the luxury residential tower will be 1,428 feet or 82 stories. The bottom of the building will house retail space, saving the commanding views of Central Park for the upper floors. Although it is more expensive to build a taller and slender building, the price per square foot is drastically greater for the top floors that offer a bird's eye view of the surrounding city. The skyscraper is clad in a handsome terra-cotta and bronze, with thin gradual setbacks on the southern façade. But down the block, the all-glass Central Park Tower's is rising quickly and will soon top out at 1,550-foot tall, making it the tallest residential building in the world. #skyscraper #supertall #superslender #57thstreet #111w57thstreet #shoparchitects #centralpark #midtown #nyc #nycrealestate #realestate #luxuryrealestate #nycurbanism #urbanism #terracotta Photos: @mchlanglo793 Facade Detail: @tectonicphoto and @field_condition respectively (at 111 West 57 St Assoc) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bwr5QhiHt48/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gw8rg8ee3t6v
