Assorted Milk Cookies Collection
Since I have been mostly consuming tea and hot chocolate for the past year, because, plague, I have decided to branch into tenuously-related-to-drinks content to spice up the blog’s variety. It’s related! Therefore drinks! For a drinks blog! Milk is included in almost all of my favourite drinks, so I don’t think I’m branching out that far.
Hand-made moumou-pai
This one’s sweet, with crystal sugar sprinkled on top. It tastes, in both texture and flavour, like those butterfly/bow pastry cookies (palmier? I think it’s french). The milk flavour is subdued by the singular taste of sugar. So, not very milky, as promised, but still a nice and airy biscuit. Not too dry.
Hand Made Butter Fumi Pie
I was most excited to open up this one as it promised pie, and therefore promised milk pie. I would like a milk pie. It is, unfortunately, not a milk pie, but another sugary flaky butterfly biscuit, but l o n g . Same as previous.
The Milk Circle (name by me, no name on the packaging)
This one’s definitely milky and buttery. It’s a surprisingly smooth and soft biscuit. Very nice. More buttery than it is sweet, which is nice too. Perhaps too buttery? It leaves a strong aftertaste. Oh! I’ve noticed there’s actually a thin layer of cream inside! That’s what’s making it so buttery and smooth.
Milk Sable
Is just a big cow face. I’m a bit apprehensive, because it seems like such a vast expanse of textural desert. Like the last one, it’s buttery, and is very much your basic butter biscuit. There doesn’t seem to be much more to it, except for the cute cow shape. I guess you can kind of sense the milk? But it isn’t a first thought. It isn’t bad, but I prefer the cream filling one more.
Milk Crunch
I was going to save this for last because it looks like a sweet candy, but the last one has the words “custard” on it and I like to save the best for last. End on a high note.
As I suspected, this is not a cookie, but a crunchy milk chocolate bar. It’s sweet, obviously, has a nice texture, and of all the snacks I’ve tried thus far, actually tastes like milk. I may have ended on the wrong high note.
Milk Cookies with Milk and Custard
This one promises a voluminous quantity of milk was used, and that it’ll taste like the “refreshing air of a plateau”, so grab your Charles Dickens for some great expectations, everyone. It even has the word milk printed on the cookie. It is the ONLY cookie with milk promised inside and out (the cows don’t count because animal cookies exist).
It definitely tastes the most unique out of all the other cookies. Like an outlier. It’s harder, not buttery, and has a bittersweet - custardy, maybe? - flavour, like sweet caramel popcorn. It’s quite plain, and I guess in that way, it is like a plateau. It’s not bad, but it just doesn’t feel like it’s gushing out voluminous milk. But it does have a very distinct scent and aftertaste. Sweet popcorn feels like it’s lingering in the air.
Rankings - Visual, Packaging
Packaging is very important, especially in japanese snacks, so this is deserving of its own separate ranking. Based on a personal system that I created just now that considers 1) visual appeal, 2) clarity of content, and 3) originality, Casey’s Assorted Milk Cookies Collection Packaging Rank Awards has reached a conclusion from worst to best:
Last - The Milk Circle: Okay, it’s just a cow print. Sure, it gets the point across, but it’s also just a cow print, and tells us nothing, not even a name.
5 - Milk Cookies with Milk and Custard: Informative, and the colours sort of reflect the custard inside, but they just slapped a cow and some words and called it a day. Also, false promises. And honestly? I don’t really like the colour combination either.
4 - Surprisingly, Hand Made Butter Fumi Pie: I thought I would rank this higher, because it’s got a distinct vibe. Very rustic, and farm-ly, and harmonious, and it’s got a ice cow in front of a farm. It’s distinguished. But I just like the others better.
3 - Milk Sable: It’s cute, it’s unique, it looks exactly like the cookie, and it clearly appeals to its target audience (children). It’s a cow milk cookie, nothing can be clearer.
2 - Milk Crunch: I didn’t expect to place it so high, but I just think it’s neat. I like the realistic milk being poured. I like how it straddles the line between sophisticated and being boring. You’d think it’s boring, but the more you look at it - the letters surrounded by gold, reflecting the crunch, the boring times new roman font, the milk - it’s clear that this is a snack trying to be sophisticated and professional. This is a High End Snack, which is an oxymoron, and it reflects that perfectly.
First - Hand-made moumou-pai: it has everything - the word “cow”, with a helpful pronunciation next to it, a little rustic farm, a little cow dot, and a transparency that takes into account the visual appeal of the snack itself (a cow shape). By having that transparency, it evokes the feeling seeing the cow being in a farm. ++.
Visual, Snack
This refers to the look of the snack itself. I’ll make it quick, since I don’t think it really matters.
Last - Milk Circle: Again, it’s just a circle.
5 - Hand Made Butter Fumi Pie: It’s a long butterfly cookie, and butterfly cookies actually look like butterflies so it’s not even that.
4 - Milk Cookies with Milk and Custard: I like that it looks like a small milk jug. It’s not bad, it just isn’t as good.
3 - Milk Crunch: Fun interesting textures! Visually appealing.
2 - Milk Sable: Adorably big cow face. What’s not to love.
First - Hand-made moumou-pai: It’s shaped like a COW. A lot of thought has gone into this cookie.
Taste, Snack
The important ranking that actually tells you something about the snack! Of course, it’s mainly down to personal preference, but also how prominent the milk flavours are in cookies dedicated to milk.
Last - Hand made Butter Fumi Pie: It just tastes like your ordinary butterfly cookie/palmier/papillons. Sugary, sweet, nice texture, but no milk taste. It’s behind moumou-pai because there’s just more of nothing.
5 - Hand-made moumou-pai: See above. They taste virtually identical to me.
4 - Milk Sable: An ordinary butter cookie.
3 - Milk Cookies with Milk and Custard: An ordinary butter cookie, but its got a unique caramel/custard flavour to it.
2 - Milk Crunch: Sweet and delicious, but not a cookie.
First - Milk Circle: Milk Circle comes full circle and ends on top! Despite its plain presentation, in both texture and flavour it truly is a gem hidden in the rough. It’s soft and crumbly, without being dry, and the flavour is enhanced by the thin lining of cream you can only find after biting into it, making for a pleasant surprise. All in all, Milk Circle ends on top because at the end of the day, flavour is most important. The rest is just.. accessory.
Instead of words, I messed with the instrumental playlist and managed to cycle through the entire list of song suggestions
🖤🖤🖤🖤Why am I so sad? Why fucking mental illness. Like it isn't bad enough to have diseases but no ur mind gets to be fucked up too. Well just wanna say thanks for that. I really love being mentally ill. I love waking up feel no desire to do anything. To have to fake how well I am. To have people believe I'm fine because I'm so tired of making them feel bad or clueless as how to help me. I want to disappear or something. I've been this way so long I don't know how else to feel. People who don't understand or care don't get what it's like to deal with this on a daily basis. They think medication will solve you. No, it just temporarily numbs you. That's all. Depression is terminal. It makes you addicted to your sadness. I wish I could fix it. I wish I loved myself. I wish I cared. Just a little more. But I dont. I don't get it. I don't want to be this way. But whatever nothing will probably ever change.🖤🖤🖤🖤
