A HUGE THANK YOU
To all of you who applied Friday and everyone who has applied this year! You have just taken the first step towards closing America's achievement gap. You are about to become part of an amazing corps of men and women who are fighting their hardest to give every child in this country the education that he or she deserves.
Howard Thurman Center Event Thursday 7pm
ONLY 1 IN 10 AMERICAN CHILDREN growing up in poverty will graduate from college. As far as I’m concerned, that’s just an unacceptable fact of life, and Teach for America (www.teachforamerica.org) wants to work with us to make a change. Teach for America is a national non-profit organization with the mission of providing an excellent education for all children. It’s been well documented that our current educational system has allowed an ACHIEVEMENT GAP between children of low-income communities and their higher income peers to persist. We see this in Boston at the Jackson Mann School, just a mile down Comm Ave, where only 17% of 8th graders tested proficient in math, and ONLY 5% WERE PROFICIENT IN SCIENCE. TEACH FOR AMERICA’S MISSION is to enlist promising future leaders like you in the movement to eliminate this educational inequality. They do this by building a diverse, highly selective national corps of outstanding recent college graduates—of all academic majors and career interests—who COMMIT TWO YEARS TO TEACH in urban and rural public schools in one of the nation’s most under-served communities. The Howard Thurman Center will be hosting TFA’s FINAL INFO SESSION of the semester on THURSDAY 1/27 at 7:00 PM. For more info, email BU Campus Rep. Missy Goldberg (CAS '11) at [email protected]. Also, please note that the final deadline to apply is Friday, February 4, 2011. I TALK WITH STUDENTS all the time WHO WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE in our world. I truly believe that TFA is an opportunity for college grads of all majors and backgrounds to do just that. Do yourself the favor, and at least check out the info session. I’ll certainly be there to lend my support. Raúl Raul Fernandez, Assistant Director The Howard Thurman Center at Boston University
