"Morning Janet" I smiled, swiping my ID badge onto the electronic register at reception.
"Morning Y/N, these came for you" she replied, handing me 2 envelopes. I took these off her, walking down the corridor into my classroom, setting down my bag and opening my laptop and placing it on my desk. I walked over to the door, hooking my coat on the back of it. I sat at my desk, turning on my laptop and focusing my attention back to my letters. The first one was a voucher book for the kids to take home, which encouraged healthy eating with coupons. I chuckled, placing them to one side. The other letter was larger. I opened the packet and was met by a large bundle of letters, with a yellow piece of paper. I glanced at the yellow piece of paper, realising that it was the progress and attendance register.
I sighed. "About time" I muttered to myself.
For weeks I'd be requesting these from the senior leadership team at the school, but was always greeted with "soon Miss Y/L/N!". I'd be concerned about several of the kids I'm class, Maddy Hemmings in particular. She was the newest child in my class, being here for just over 5 months. She and her family were apparently new to the area. She was a lovely girl, always worked hard and knew all of her timetables. I had raised a few concerns regarding her attendance, I'd noticed that she would often be late into school or not show up. Eventually I decided that there was a patterns of her not coming, particularly on a Monday. When she came in on the Tuesday, she appeared tired, I once saw her sleeping in class.
"Maddy, are you tired?" I whispered, noticing that she'd fallen asleep at the back of the class. I tried to hush my voice, not wanting to embarrass her.
"Yes Miss, Daddy was just up late and so was I" she replied sweetly, before returning to her classwork.
I reported my concerns to my boss, who advised me to pass them over to the safeguarding leader, Linda. Linda knew the parents and kids very well, treating them all equally and dealing with issues.
"I heard her father, Mr Hemmings is in a band, possibly?" she once said to me.
I chuckled. "How responsible".
I focused my attention back to the attendance record, and went down to Maddy's surname. I scrolled my finger along her attendance and slightly gasped. In the last 5 months Maddy had 2 authorised absences from school, and over 15 unauthorised ones. Her attendance was down to 54%, concerning me.
I stood up, and walked towards Linda's office. I knocked on her door, she spun her chair around and welcomed me in.
"So I guess you've seen the attendance record?" she sighed, taking her glasses off.
"I'm shocked. Maddy Hemmings' is bad".
"I know, I'm going to ring her Dad, his name is Luke I believe, and we can arrange a meeting. If we get a weird vibe off him I'll call Charlie, are you OK with that?" she replied, referring to our social worker.
"Of course. This needs to be closely monitored." I replied.
******
"Morning Miss Y/L/N!!" several children yelled as they walked past me to get into the school. I'd offered to take the morning shift off Linda so she could sort out our meeting with Mr Hemmings. Plus I wanted to get a glimpse of the guy before, hoping that he would drop her off. I sipped my coffee, standing at the front gates. I turned my head towards the school, checking that everyone was getting in OK.
"Maddy come on you're gonna be late" I heard someone say.
"I'm coming Dad-watch out!!" I heard a familiar voice say. I turned around, and was met by a figure bumping into me, sending my coffee flying over my dress. I gasped, shocked at the sensation. Luckily the drink was somewhat cold so it didn't burn much.
"oh my god I am so sorry" the man said, panic spread across his face. He looked up at me, looking flushed.
"oh it's fine, you didn't mean to" I said, unsure of what to do. I attempted to cover up the mess with my cardigan, wrapping it around my body, picking up the now smashed mug off the floor.
"Seriously I am so so sorry I was just in a rush and Maddy was late an-" the guy spoke, rushing his words.
"Oh you're Maddy's father? I'm Miss Y/L/N, her teacher, nice to meet you Mr Hemmings" I interrupted him, finally putting a face to his name. I held out my hand, and Mr Hemmings replied with shaking it.
"look I'm so sorry for what I did" he said, awkwardly placing a hand on my shoulder.
"Its okay, accidents happen, right? Luckily I have something else to get changed into" I weakly smiled, remembering the spare top and trousers in my car.
"OK, well in that case I guess we're good?" he suggested, giving me a thumbs up.
"Of course." I replied, stunned by his slightly rudeness.
"Anyway, I've gotta go. Bye princess." Mr Hemmings said, kissing Maddy on the cheek. Maddy giggled, running to the entrance of the school. I smiled at Mr Hemmings, before he quickly exited the conversation.
"How rude" I muttered to myself. I glanced at my watch, realising I only had 10 minutes to get changed out of my coffee drenched clothes and get into my class to teach. I ran to my car, and got my spare clothes.
******
Linda chuckled. "I've gotta go? How rude" she scoffed at me, thinking back to the earlier events with Mr Hemmings. It was break time in the staff room, and I decided to catch up with her after this morning.
I groaned. "So anyway, what's the plan of action?"
"Well I call Mr Hemmings, Luke, and he's free today to meet, so I invited him in around 12:30, if that's okay?".
"Count me in" I replied.
*****
"Thank you for coming in at such short notice, Mr Hemmings." Linda started the conversation. We were sat in the small meeting room, just us 3.
He smiled. "No worries, hope I can help" he said, shuffling in his seat, checking his phone before resting it onto the table.
"This is Y/N Y/L/N, Maddy's teacher".
I smiled, shaking his hand.
"Erm yes, we met earlier" he said awkwardly. I slightly chuckled.
"The reason why we've called this meeting today is to discuss Maddy's attendance. We've noticed recently that she often misses days off school, and sometimes we don't get any notice." Linda stated.
"Right okay" he said, looking confused.
"Maddy is a great kid. She works so hard in my lessons, she's very bright. We both just had some concerns about when she's coming into school." I said, pulling out the report. I had taken a copy of Maddy's record, and showed it to Mr Hemmings.
"This says that she's been in school just over half of the time since she got here" I said, pointing to the stats. I looked up at his face, which appeared sad.
"I'm sorry. It's just difficult at times" he sighed, relaxing more into his chair.
"I understand that, but as a professionals have a duty to protect Maddy and see if there's anything we can do to help her, or you too" I replied, smiling.
"The thing is, I'm super busy with work, I work all day, 9am to 5pm, later in fact at times." Mr Hemmings defended himself.
"I understand Mr Hemmings. Are you struggling to manage Maddy at home?" Linda asked. I somewhat sighed at her words.
"We're not questioning your parents in any way, shape or form. We just want to help".
There was a long pause, before Mr Hemmings answered.
"My job is very hectic, and because its just me and Maddy, I'm responsible for her, which I love. But sometimes work and looking after her clash, like last Monday. I had a gig with my band in Paris and she had to come as I couldn't find a last minute baby sitter. She was at the concert backstage until it finished, before I got us in a flight to get straight home. We weren't asleep until 2am, and I feel so awful. I love my career, but I'm starting to think that i can't do it with Maddy." he confessed. I saw the sadness in his eyes. He really did love Maddy, but also loved his career. Who could blame him?
"I'm really glad you've been honest with us. We can help, OK? We have after school clubs that she can join, so later pick up time is an option." Linda smiled.
"In relation to the gigs, I'd advise on a baby sitter before hand, or family member?" I asked.
"My family all live in Australia or LA" he sighed.
"I've got a friend, called Michelle, who's an excellent baby sitter. I can give you her contact details? It's her full time job so she'd happily look after Maddy overnight".
He smiled, a wave of relief washing over him. "Thank you, that would be incredibly helpful" he sighed.
*****
I hopped into my car after a long busy day, and drove to the nearest supermarket. I decided since it was a Friday, I'd treat myself. I decided to buy a frozen pizza, a bottle of wine and some chocolate. I know how to live, thinking to myself. I walked to the check out, hearing a familiar voice in front of me.
"Daddy pwlease?!" Maddy begged, shoving a bag of candy into his stomach . Mr Hemmings laughed, picking them up and sighing.
"Fine, but not until after dinner". He said, before turning around to pay. I looked at his shopping, which was the same pizza I had, garlic bread and a couple of beers. I laughed, causing him to look up.
"Oh hey Miss" he said, noticing me looking at his shopping. "I've got a few mates coming round tonight" he justified.
"Nice, good choice of pizza" I laughed.
He laughed. "Yup, sure is" he replied awkwardly.
"HI Miss!!!" Maddy squealed, running over to me and giving me a high five.
"Hello Maddy." I replied, smiling at her. I had to admit she was a cute kid.
"Daddy's friends are funny, they sing really badly" she confessed, giggling into the palms of her hands. Mr Hemmings groaned, laughing at his daughter.
"Oh I'm sure they're better than you think" I replied sweetly. Maddy then skipped off to the chairs in front of the check out, leaving me and her father alone.
"Big night?" he looked at my items, paying for his own.
I sighed. "Not really. Just a quiet Friday night in."
"Nice, well if you wanted something to do, our band are playing at the local theatre. You should come and check it out" he smiled, putting his items in his bag.
Part of me couldn't, with the whole "its not cool to mingle with parents" kinda rule. But the other part of me wanting to. He was cute, nice, caring. It had been a while since I hang out with a guy.
"Why not? Should be good".
"OK, well maybe see you there" he winked playfully, taking hold of Maddy's hand to walk off.
"Bye Miss!" Maddy screamed.
"Bye Maddy, Mr Hemmings" I smiled at them both.
"Its Luke by the way" he said playfully, before walking off.

Part 2
I dialled the familiar number into my phone, seeing "Ashton" flash up on the dim screen. I debated with myself, whether to press the button to call him. I decided to go for it. What did I have to loose? I pressed the green icon, followed by 2 rings, before the line connected.
"Shit" I muttered to myself. I listened closely. The line was connected but I couldn't hear anything. After a few seconds of silence, I heard a voice.
"Y/N? What's up?" I heard Michael say through the phone.
I was somewhat thankful that it was him. Michael and I were the closest friends whilst I dated Ashton. I took my mind back to a happier time with him, days at the beach with his dogs and playing beer pong with him and Crystal. I decided that was my point of entry.
"How's Crystal?" I muttered shyly.
"Er, yes she's good. Listen, do you wanna speak to Ash? He's here, looking at me." Michael slurred, giggling . Great, I realised that I'd called them whilst they were drinking. I looked at my clock, it was 12am here, meaning it was 10pm here. I began to feel my hands shake.
"NO, no no it's okay. I'll speak t-" I said, but was too late. I was met by a crumbling noise, followed by a deep raspy voice that that I hadn't heard in so long.
"Y/N. Is everything okay?" Ashton said, he voice soft.
I paused, not sure what to say.
"Ash."
"Y/N" he repeated.
"Are you drunk?" I whispered.
"No, I'm the driver for tonight. Are you OK? We haven't spoken in a while, after.." he was cut off by a drunken Luke snatching the phone off him. I could make out Ashton shouting "give it back!" in the background.
"Y/N man, I miss you" Luke slurred, laughing.
I subtlety laughed back. "Hey Lukey, I miss you too. Pass me back to Ashton yeah?"
"Sure thing baby, love you" Luke said, before I heard Ashton take back control.
"Sorry, he's a mess" I could feel the awkwardness in Ashton's voice.
"That's okay. Look I'm sorry I called, I was just angry". I sighed.
"Angry for what?"
"You did an interview for a London paper and you talked about.. About breaking up with me and laughing about it, 'cheering' about it ".
"That's bullshit Y/N" he scoffed. His rudeness made me feel disappointed.
"Well, it's not Ashton. I have the article right in front of me".
"You know I would never make comments about you like that in such a public way. I never would. You know how I fee-felt about you. I wouldn't destroy our relationship over that".
I scoffed. "Relationship? What relationship Ashton? Oh the one you threw away after over 2 years over a phone call?!" I screamed at the phone, unable to hold back my tears and anger.
"Y/N.." he said softly.
"NO Ashton. You got to break my heart into a million pieces, so now it's your turn to suffer. You broke my heart. You ruined my life. You're the fucking reason I have to go to therapy now. I cry myself to sleep everynight because of you. You did that!!" I screamed down the line. I was met with silence from Ashton and a light echo from the music on Ashton's line.
"I, I have to go. I'll speak to you soon" Ashton said, before cutting the line.
I screamed at the top of my lungs, throwing my phone across the room, hearing it smash into millions of pieces. I sobbed hard into my pillow, shocked at how Ashton could just hang up after I told him everything. I could feel my stomach twisting and turning, feeling sick. I ran to the bathroom and threw up, sobbing. I stood up, wiping away my mascara run face and returned back to bed. I decided to try and sleep, knowing that I had a big day ahead of me.
******
"Y/N you promised!" Sam said, standing at my door, crossing her arms over her chest, pouting.
"No I didn't, I said I'd think about it"
"Please?! I need a girl to back me up!" Sam pleaded.
I groaned. "Fine, but only because I need to go to town to fix my phone" . I agreed to go to the stupid rugby game with Sam and her boyfriend, Toby. I liked Toby. He was kind, and Sam truly loved him. It was something I was jealous of.
I grabbed my bag and my phone, which I had managed to piece back together, just the screen needed replacing. We hopped onto the bus to get into town, and ran to the phone shop. The phone guy gave me a judging look, noticing the cracks all over.
"I dropped it" lying.
We then walked to the nail salon, something that I desperately needed. After last night, there was nothing I wanted to do was get my nails done and tell someone how much of a dick Ashton had been, but Sam didn't know his harsh breakup had made me feel. She didn't know how I truly felt.
"Soooo, seen any cute guys around campus?" she asked.
I rolled my eyes. "no, and I won't. None exist" I laughed, choosing my colour. I went for a green, thinking it would match the rugby teams' colour. Sam went for a silver.
"Uh. Rude. I met Toby here."
"You just got lucky" I laughed.
*******
We walked to the rugby stadium, arms linked. I decided to buy a new dress for a future night out, when I felt more up for it. I decided to buy the Rugby top too, to try and fit it. I styled it with a green and white flannel and a demi skirt, with Vans. Sam looked hot, wearing also a rugby top, black tight leggings and boots. We attempted to look for Toby in the busy crowd outside the stadium, who had the tickets. We then were met by a tap on our shoulders, we spun around and saw a smiling Toby. Sam squealed, kissing her man on the lips. My jealous gaze was then distracted by a tall boy standing next to him. I looked at the boy. He was cute, wearing also a flannel shirt and black skinny jeans. I smiled at him, but confused.
"Y/N, this is Aidan, Tony's course mate". She smirked. I rolled my eyes, realising what this was.
"Excuse me for one second" I fake smiles before dragging Sam away. "How could you do this again?!"
"Look. He's cute right?"
".. Yeah.. But not the point Sam, you promised no more blind dates."
"Technically this isn't a blind date. Toby invited him a while back... I just chose to not tell you" Sam said looking at the floor.
"I can't believe you" I replied.
"Look, he's really nice okay? If you don't like him, we'll go. Deal?"
"Deal"
******
I hated being wrong. Aidan was actually really nice, and sweet. He was really into his music, from The 1975, to Neck Deep, both of which I adored. We talked about how much we both hated rugby, and how we were forced to come.
"Toby said the ticket was free, plus we'd go out after" he said.
"Sam said the same, however I'm not going out after" I laughed. Sam shot me a scolding look, followed by puppy eyes. To be honest, I was having a great time. The game was good, our team winning. We then decided to go back to Sam's get changed and go out. I was quite tipsy from the beer I'd had at the game, forgetting the events totally from last night. I decided to wear the new dress we'd bought earlier. It was a red tight dress, that had a tie up bow in the middle.
"looking good girl" Sam said.
"here's to the night" Toby shouted, raising his glass. We all laughed, raising ours. Aidan and I continued to get along. I was starting to like this guy. I mean, how could I not? He was everything I looked for in a guy.
"Y/N, Aidan's a drummer too." she smirked, nearly falling off her chair.
I scoffed, laughing awkwardly. We both looked at each other, before laughing, leaving both boys confused and what was so funny.
"What's so funny?" Aidan asked, putting his arm around my neck.
"Nothing, nothing, I'm sure you're a better drummer anyway" I laughed, followed by Sam shrieking.
We decide after a few drinks to head to the bar, which was totally not intended. Sam and I had way too much to drink, drunkenly falling all over the place. Both boys were drunk too.
"First round on me" Aidan shouted to the bar man, ordering 4 gin and oranges. I hugged him tightly, feeling a kiss placed onto my forehead. I looked up, and saw Aidan looked at me, smiling. I really liked this guy, but didn't know if it was the alcohol that was making me more attracted to him. He was definitely my type, messy hair, curly in fact. It reminded me of Ashton's hair. I began to twirl one of his loose curls with my finger tip.
"What you thinking about?" Aidan looked at me.
"Just youuuuu" I slurred.
He laughed. "Come on, let's go and dance". He said, dragging me to the dance floor. I felt wobbly on my feet, but confident. I hadn't felt this happy in such long. I looked over to the bar, and saw Sam and Toby kissing. I envied their relationship, desperate to be kissed like that. I then spun around to face Aidan, who was looking at them too. He looked at me, before stepping towards me and placing his soft lips onto mine. The kiss was light, smooth, not rough. It was a drunken kiss, but a cute one. I could feel myself becoming deeper into the kiss, putting my arms around his neck. Aidan wrapped his arms around my waist to hold me steady. I paused for a second, getting an idea.
"Wanna come back to mine?" I said, feeling a spark of confidence.
"Yes" was all he replied.
We ran, hand in hand, towards Sam and Toby, informing that we were "tired" so needed to go home. Sam caught on before I left, grabbing my hand.
"Wasn't I right? Have fun" she winked.
We hopped into the nearest taxi, as I gave my address. I didn't live far from town, so I knew it wouldn't be a long drive. We both sat in the taxi in silence. Aidan looked over at me, smirking. He then placed his left hand on my knee, slowly moving his hand up my thigh and up my skirt. I could feel myself becoming breathless at this point, desperately wanting him to do more. I lightly stopped his hand, but whispering in his ear "be patient."
We hopped out of the taxi, Aidan throwing the driver a few crumpled notes. I ran to my door, excited at what would happen next. It had been ages since I'd last slept with a guy, and boy was I nervous. Ashton and I had sex often, even if it was between shows on tour or in secret at the hotels. I missed the spontaneous sex life we had.
I stumbled in the door, unaware of how drunk I was. I giggled, shutting the door behind Aidan. I let Aidan walk into the living room, as I took my shoes off.
"uh, babe?" he shouted.
"YEAA?" I giggled.
"I didn't know you had a roommate?" he shouted.
I laughed, walking into the living room.
"I don-" I said.
I was interrupted by a tall guy in black skinny jeans, wearing a black band merch hoodie. His hair was messy, curly locks sprawled across his face. He looked at me, with bitterness in his eyes.
"Ashton?"
