Summary: Luke is planning on proposing to Y/N, but in order to make sure she doesn’t find out, he acts like a complete jerk who finds weddings pointless and a waste of the night which in the end revolves in Y/N getting mad at him
Luke’s fingers were drumming lightly against the pearly white dew covering the long table, his eyes focused on the band in the corner of the room on the small stage playing the soft jazz tunes to the romantic classical L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole. His free arm was resting on top of the white chair you were sitting at, a glass of sparkling bubbly white wine resting neatly in your hand.
“What’s that look?” Luke hummed against your ear and placed a soft kiss to your cheek.
“What look?” You questioned and looked down at him with a soft smile, your eyes occasionally gazing between him and Celeste and Jack dancing at the dancefloor. Their bodies pressed together romantically as she giggled lightly in happiness of something cheesy Jack whispered into her ear.
“That look.” Luke observed and lifted an eyebrow. He was constantly catching you drawing your attention towards Celeste and Jack, your eyes glancing up and down her beautiful white wedding dress that was sewed perfectly for her body. Jack was matching Luke with almost the same suit, wearing a beige butterfly while Luke wore a black tie to show difference between groom and brother.
You shrugged and leaned your head against his shoulder, keeping your eyes on the groom and the bride. Luke moved his chair closer to yours and draped an arm around your shoulder, pulling you further into his side.
“Ah, would you look at the two of you.” Luke’s old aunt came from the other side of the table, shuffling around before she moved out one of the chairs from the table and took a seat down.
“Hey aunty.” Luke commented with a smile and sat more straight in his seat, but remaining his hand on you. You smiled at her in greeting and lifted your glass, clicking them together with her and took a sip of the cold liquid. You knew this would be the last glass, you were at the edge of being slightly tipsy.
“So is this place making some bells ring in those beautiful heads of yours?” She said after sipping twice on her glass and placed it down on the white dew. You looked up at Luke with a smile and he cracked a smirk followed by a chuckle.
“What do you mean?” He asked interested, but somehow knew what she was hinting at. She rolled her eyes by his unaware acting and leaned forward with her elbows pressed against the table and fiddled with her hands. “I mean wedding bells. When are you guys planning on taking the next step, I mean, it took so many years for Celeste and Jack but with you guys I’m expecting something soon.”
“Soon? Aunty come on, we’ve only been together for three years.” Luke scoffed at her and laughed like she was ridiculous.
“So you’re saying the thought of proposing haven’t crossed your mind?”
You looked up at Luke by her sudden question but he didn’t seem to change his attitude. He didn’t even look uncomfortable but simply shook his head, being somehow pure honest. You felt a gutted feeling run up your spin and you shifted in your seat uncomfortably.
“Marriage is stupid, aunty.” Luke stated and leaned his back against the seat. You looked at him with wide eyes and felt your mouth getting dry. This act from Luke was getting too weird, of course you guys hadn’t been talking about this subject before but you never believed it wouldn’t be an option.
“So you don’t want to get married?” His aunt was looking at him rather confused, somehow feeling sorry on your behalf. You were almost boiling inside at this point, getting angry with Luke and his weird attitude. He was never acting like this.
“No, isn’t life just easier if you’re not committed to someone like that? I mean the only reason I can see marriage as a benefit is just the paper work I have to sign to say she is mine, and I am hers legally, so that if one of us is ever sick, or goodness forbids in the hospital after some horrible accident then nothing can keep us apart.”
Both your eyes and his aunts widened, looking at him so confused you didn’t even know how to comment on that.
“So what you’re saying is that our relationship doesn’t even have a future?” You didn’t want to question to leave your lips but you felt so offended by his words and his attitude, you couldn’t control it.
“Of course we have a future, Y/N. But not in the marriage part, just as being in a relationship. But I mean, that’s not a major problem is it? As long as the two of us are together.” Luke grinned and caressed his fingers up and down your bare arm, smiling politely at his aunt.
“I guess.” You shrugged awkwardly and focused at your empty wine glass. He was acting too weird for your liking, he had never been so foreign to the subject as he was now. When you guys started dating he never denied talking about marriage, proposal and even kids! What if he had changed mind with that as well?
“But now if you would have me excused, I would love to invite my wonderful girlfriend out for a dance.” He pushed his chair out and offered his hand. You looked at him confused but copied his act and stood up from your chair as well, placed your hand in his and politely smiled at his aunt before he followed you to the dance floor.
You looked at him confused as he placed his hand on your hip, lifting the paired hands in the air and indicated you to place your hand on his shoulder. He smiled down at you softly while swinging you around to the music, but you didn’t return it and avoided eye contact.
“What?” Luke asked and let go of you to take a step back to the drum beat of the music, only to pull you closer to his body when he pulled you back, making you wrap your arms around his neck.
You rolled your eyes by his lack of awareness and sighed.
“It’s so romantic.” You mumbled and gazed between the many pairs of happy couples, now dancing around to the trumpet solo in the song. The band was really giving their best to copy a true jazz artist for generations.
“What?” He asked and pressed a small kiss to your cheek, “Dancing to jazz beats?”
“No…” You said quietly and rolled your eyes by his attempt of cracking a funny joke. “Getting married of course.”
Luke shook his head disagreeing and looked over at Jack and Celeste. He removed his hands to adjust the black tie around his neck before they went back to your waist.
“What does marriage mean to you?” His voice was causal, but he somehow seemed off in his eyes.
You guys had never talked about this, it was almost like he was reading your mind. Leading up to Celeste and Jack’s wedding had changed your perspective on yours and Luke’s relationship. Were you guys simply stuck or not ready to take the next move? You had been together for three years but were still young. It would affect your lives for the rest of your days.
“At first I didn’t realize how much it actually meant to me but the last couple of weeks... Seeing Jack and Celeste plan all of this has changed my perspective on everything. But I guess you don’t see it that way.” You mumbled the last part and looked down at the floor.
“Nah… I think it’s a waste of night. I mean, using such a huge amount of money on just a dress and a place for just one night?” Luke shrugged with a casual smile, lifting your hands in the air and swung you around. Normally, his affection would leave you blushing but he was acting so weird and shady you couldn’t control the anger. You furrowed your eyebrows and pulled away from him, needing to get something off your chest.
“So what you’re saying is that marriage is a stupid paper work that you don’t see as something special?” You crossed your arm and looked at him with furrowed eyebrows. If he was feeling like this why were you guys even together? If he knew you well, he would know that this was a huge deal to you.
“Yeah.” Luke breathed and placed his hands in his pockets and looked between the ground and you. He bit his lip while smirking at you but it faded away when you ran a hand through your hair frustrated.
“You’re unbelievable. I uh- I have to leave.” You mumbled and turned around, not wanting to deal with this any longer. He was acting too weird for anything to make sense, and it was making you sadder to think about the fact that there wasn’t a future to this. Almost say it was three years of waste in something you expected to happen that would never occur.
Luke watched you shamelessly as you hurried towards the exit and ran out of the door.
“Way to fucking go, Luke.” He mumbled to himself irritated, annoyed about his ridiculous way of handling the whole situation. But he couldn’t stop doing it. It was like a panic button being pressed that he had no control of. Only because he was so afraid of you finding out what was going on.
He reached his hand down in his pocket and fished out the small red navy blue box, his fingers lightly rubbing over the fabric as he mentally kicked himself for his way of handling situation like these that never seemed to stop at the moment.
