What is Asexuality?
What happens when a species that functions as a reproductive organism is faced with a person who has no desire for the main expression of survival: sex? These people are thought of as frigid, sick, depressed or suffering from some type of trauma. But this is not always the case. In fact, there are people in our society who for one reason or another, have no sexual attraction or desires. These people are known as Asexuals.
As a culture, we are constantly on the receiving end of various expectations that dictate what is "natural" and what isn't by our friends, family, colleagues, media and society at large. We are constantly exposed to endless amounts of sexual publicity and imagery via the media and entertainment industries. Thus, it is unsurprising that Asexuals can easily feel isolated, confused and misunderstood.
And yet, if we can conceive that sex without love can exist, is it really that hard to accept that love without sex could also be possible?
Asexuals embody a wide spectrum of people: they range from flat-out Asexual's who enjoy the companionship and romanticism of being in a relationship (and will even have sex to produce a child or please their partner, but not for their own pleasure), as well as those who are completely Aromantic, where the thought of intimate physical contact with another person makes them feel ill.
For many people, Asexuality is hard to understand; they will rationalize it by attributing it to a "phase" in life, or that you haven't met the "right one", or that you do feel sexual desires but are choosing 'celibacy' out of individual or religious beliefs.
The truth is that according to recent studies, the prevalence of people claiming to be Asexual accounts for approximately 1% of the population. Psychology is beginning to slowly accept an absent or diminished sex drive as a sexual identity, and only consider it dysfunctional if it causes significant distress in the person's life.
To embrace Asexuality gives birth to the momentous feelings of Self-Understanding and Self-Love in the lives of those who experience it. In fact, Asexuality provides immense freedom from society's lustful and sexually obsessed ideas of "love."
Asexuality can be seen as a gift that allows the individual to experience a pure state of love beyond physical attraction. The bottom line is that sexuality is much more complex and ambiguous than we think, and can be thought of energy that is fluid and changeable over time.
So while some Asexuals will continue to feel no sexual or romantic attraction to others throughout their entire lives, some Asexuals claim to have at one point been Demisexualswho experience sexual interests only once building deep bonds with a person.
