Letters Interacting

This was created for an art exhibit through the Calligraphic Arts Guild of Toronto that I belong to. The exhibition is called "Letters Interacting" April 23rd to May 13th showing at the Neilson Park Creative Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This piece, titled "Letters Interacting" was authentically hand lettered using a pilot parallel 6.0mm calligraphy pen on white bond paper using Royal Blue Pelikan ink (later colourized to red using digital arts post processing). Original size approx 2' wide by 4' high.

For me this is a major project and accomplishment in calligraphy and digital arts. This project started months ago (last fall) with the concept of having letters fall down the page fitted to one another. This was way harder than I ever anticipated. I first had to develop the typeface that would be appropriate for this project. I developed "Textura Tall and Narrow", which was a major project on its own. Then the hard part - the composition.

I struggled immensely with at least five or six attempts at this composition before the piece fell into place. And once it started to fall into place the rest was magic. I stayed up until 3:00am on Saturday March 3, 2012 to complete the bulk of this work. At one point I was going to abandon the project completely as it just wasn't working for me. The challenges with this piece included: • Encouraging the letters to "Get along" with one another; • Choosing the right letters;  • Balancing the letters against an imaginary centreline;  • Using letters that compliment one another;  • And doing all this using the basic rule of letter order (a-z).

What helped me was simplicity -- using a classic design ratio of 1:2 as a page, and secondly using an imaginary centre line to balance the letters against. Seems simple, but wow it was very difficult.

I am so happy that I didn't give up on this piece, as this may be one of my greatest calligraphy accomplishments to date. What stands out for me is the use of the swirls in this piece that help balance the letters against the imaginary centreline. The swirls also give it some appeal and add interest. The swirls were accomplished by stroking the calligraphy pen while varying the edge pressure -- quick motion, difficult to get right. The texture of the ink and wine red colourization on basic white also appeal to me. This piece was created using my "Textura Tall and Narrow" typeface which I am also very happy with.

This piece will be made commercially available soon. It comes in four options:

Option 1 - Large White on Red Background - Unframed Option 2 - Large Red on White Background - Unframed Option 3 - Small White on Red Background - Framed Option 4 - Small Red on White Background - Framed

The Large Size is roughly 2' wide by 4.3' high, printed on high quality canvas that is unframed, and lasts forever. The small version is printed on 18" (cropped to 15") x 24" photo paper and is professionally framed including a very wide matte -- add about 6 inches for frame and matte to calculate the overall size.
