Week 11: Collaboration post

Since I work in the nonprofit sector (for a foundation that gives away grant dollars to charitable organizations), my special project is focused on how to create a collaborative group of funders that shares knowledge systematically, or even a funding collaborative.

I chose to reach out to @supergearyame because she has been working in the nonprofit sector for many years. Her perspective on what it is like to be on the receiving end of grant dollars will be extremely helpful to me.

My plan is to:

Create a network analysis map of common grantees among 6-8 funders in the Cleveland area

Perform a small organizational culture assessment for the participating foundations to find common values

Begin mapping knowledge on our common grantees

After that is where I’m stuck and I requested Alana’s help specifically. I would love to have a shared application or a shared reporting system, but with that many diverse opinions on what to include, it has not worked in the past. If anyone else has any ideas, I’d be happy to hear!

Wk11: Collaboration

How and why did I choose to reach out to this person?

·      Highly engaged in replying back to the feedback they received

·      Seemed to reach out to multiple posts a week

·      In replying to feedback they had received, they went further than the typical “thank you for your reply!” They went on to explain how they will be implementing the feedback in current and future posts. Additionally, they went further by asking for more specific reasoning behind the feedback as a way to dig deeper and (at times) challenging the feedback in an appropriate manner

 What am I hoping to gain from this interaction?

·      How they leverage constructive criticism

·      Have they gained new perspectives in reaching out to multiple posts a week and/or challenging the feedback they had received

·      Has further engagement helped in creating and submitting a better special project?

Special Project Collaboration

The special project I am working on is different from the project originally described on Tumblr. The “grant hub” I wanted to create was not approved by my supervisor, so instead I will be working on a project I was assigned to create a file management system for the organization. Because Amber manages a library at her organization I reached out to her for feedback. I hope to hear from her on some technical aspects to a file management system, such as file naming conventions, as well as ideas on how to avoid pitfalls that she may have encountered in managing her library over time.

Collaboration

I forgot to post this weekend!  My apologies. I found the collaboration exercise very thought-provoking and encouraging.  I was not asked to collaborate on anyone’s project.  That tells me I have more internal investigation to do. Overall, a worthwhile concept.

Collaboration Post

I chose to collaborate with a peer this week that was working on a project similar to my own.  We are both concerned with finding ways to retain the knowledge of employees when they leave a company and since we are working on the same topic I thought she might be able to give me guidance on a couple of areas that I had questions about.  During the process of writing the email and then waiting for a reply, I realized that I was concerned that my classmate may not want to share her insights or research with me.  I imagine this is how many people in organizations that do not have developed knowledge management programs in place feel and I thought about what we had read about knowledge hoarding. Of course, the peer I had reached out to was more than happy to speak with me and gave me some good advice about my project. But now I am curious about how a similar situation would play out in a work situation when replying to my questions would not be required.  Would a coworker who was not concerned with getting a good grade be as willing to offer me guidance?  I suppose this is what the whole purpose of this class is, to learn how to create environments where concerns like knowledge hoarding will not exist.

IAKM 60303 - week 11: Collaboration

When selecting the persons to interact with as peer, I reviewed the class roster and my first criteria was persons who lived or worked near the Washington DC area.  In one of my previous classes, in the first introduction lesson, I learned that one of the persons in the class worked in DC.  She has graduated since then but we have maintained our friendship.  I think what brought us together was not just the fact that we were both students at Kent and worked in the same field, but we were both single mothers the majority of the time and had to deal with the challenges of work and parenting.  We are now great collaborators. Our class roster did not include anyone who lived / worked in the DC area.  So my next criteria was to choose someone who is related to my work because I thought there would be more collaboration from getting to know each other professionally.  As a result I chose Greg Wlaston and Maria del Rocio.  From both I am hoping to learn and share about our experience working in the KM field.  From Greg I am also interested to learn how it feels and the experience of working in the same company for almost twenty years.  From Maria del Rocio I am interested in sharing our experiences in KM consulting and also our international development work – she used to work with UNICEF Egypt.

Week 11 - Collaboration

I have tried to contact two persons, one because our special project is very similar to mine (unfortunately, I didn’t manage to send a message via LinkedIn) and the other one cause I believe, due to the fact that his background and mine are so different, we can help each other and build upon each other’s knowledge and experience.

I sent my invitation late, so I will attend for his response maybe tomorrow.

As for me, no one has reached me out for help but I do understand the reasoning behind. I haven’t been very punctual in my postings, nor have I paid attention to the grammar or writings, which I did very fast and didn’t review before posting them. All of these provide a bad impression to the readers/audience/colleagues, a sense that I do not care about the fixed schedules, the need to provide a serious and professional responses well meditated and worked. My justifications could only serve to understand the delays, however still my writings may look as a lack of respect of not serious approach towards the course or my colleagues themselves. Therefore I do understand the lack of responses.

Peer Collaboration

For this weeks peer collaboration email, I chose someone from the class who I thought would be able to help me on my project. This is someone who I believe to be very knowledgeable on KM subjects.

While I do not want someone to go out of their way to solve my problems, I am hoping to confirm that I did not miss something. I am treating this collaboration as a second set of eyes that might catch a crucial detail that I might have missed. In my project I am looking at how KM can benefit small groups such as project teams. I asked a peer if they knew of any KM practices that could be beneficial to smaller group settings, or if there were any examples/ use cases of this method. I plan to check this information against my own, and if it is vastly different from what I have, I need to restructure my approach.
