he  ran  a  finger  along  the  rim  of  his  wineglass,  watching  as  the  ruby  liquid  swirled.  it  was  a  gift,  of  course,  a  gesture  —  though  gifts  from  someone  like  max  never  came  without  strings.  reaching  into  the  inside  pocket  of  his  tailored  suit,  he  retrieved  the  small  box.  he  placed  it  gently  in  front  of  her  on  the  table.  inside,  nestled  in  a  velvet  lining,  was  a  necklace.  not  just  any  necklace,  but  one  crafted  from  a  single,  perfect  diamond,  the  kind  that  could  blind  the  unprepared.  it  glimmered  with  an  otherworldly  radiance,  an  eternal  flame  that  would  never  dim.  even  max,  who  had  seen  treasures  beyond  imagination,  felt  a  small  thrill  watching  her  reaction.

dark brown eyes scan the phone resting in his hand. they read what has been read for at least more than ten times since the text was received. no matter how many times lacey reads the text from his uncle, he still can’t believe it.

as part of his recovery, lacey had finally asked rex to only let his dad know he’s alive. he didn’t think his dad would want to see him until rex mentioned to lacey that he did. it took a lot of will power to let his dad come over. knowing that his dad knew he was breathing still almost sent lacey back to his old ways. but he didn’t let himself. he didn’t want to explain new fresh bites when he had so many to talk about already. lacey beat his desires and agreed to let his dad come.

the night has come for his dad to arrive. he felt a bundle of nerves. he kept on fidgeting as the hour for his dad to arrive quickly came. for what seemed like a brief second, lacey had managed to calm down, but that quickly diminished when there was a knock on the door.

lacey pulls open the door, revealing the eldest wolfe standing there before him. he heaved in a deep breath, feeling like it was hard to breath. his heart clenched in his chest. he lets his breath out slowly and simply says “dad…”
