On Capcom's treatment of Resident Evil Female Characters...
Saw a tweet of a Claire fan very fairly complaining about how Capcom has treated her and I 100% agree. For some reason Capcom keeps treating the female leads like a secondary character.
Jill is my favorite RE girl, and while I enjoyed Carlos a lot in the Remake of 3 (which is a bad Remake and I still kinda hate that they cut it so short!!! It was so clearly an experiment to gauge how to approach 4 remake...), I did not like that Carlos got parts where Jill should have been the playable character (meaning, the RPD section).
Yes Jill later gets to "roam" the Hospital a bit, but let's not lie to ourselves we lost entire areas like the Park, the Gravedigger boss, and the Factory (this last one very lore heavy as it showed how Umbrella was disguising itself).
I have played also Revelations 1, which is a very enjoyable experience (imo it's a fusion of OG RE3 with a timed dodge mechanic, and RE5), but Jill is not the sole protagonist.
The side characters are fun, I loved Parker, the two BSAA agents are a funny duo... Chris... Chris feels tacked on and we didn't need to play as him IMO he's just... there forcefully imo...
Jill's protagonism in that game is stolen by having different leads. I would have been fine with Parker sections... but the rest was too much.
Like they're scared of having a female lead.
Revelations 2, one of my favorite RE games, has Barry who I adore, but again, we have a game for Claire that has her co-protagonist be an iconic character. So Claire doesn't get her very own game ever since Code Veronica (thay I hope they remake without sidelining her)
This same issue happens to Ada who got the shortest end of the stick because the potential for Ada and her OWN game is just... peak, she could be in ANY RE game with her own side campaign and be a gimmick to every game, and it'd be AMAZING as we'd get insight on lore! But no, she's "Leon's romantic torture" and that's it, that's how she's used.
In RE6 Ada interacts with all campaigns, and while the story is ass, the concept is there for Ada to actually be involved in a lot of the bioterrorism stuff!
We NEED Capcom to understand that WE WANT these women to be leads on their own right as much as Leon and Chris are.
I will also add (PLEASE NO SPOILERS) that what worries me about Grace is that she'll be sidelined by Leon, I like the concept: horror and action, I love it, and I love the idea that Leon will teach her to overcome her anxiety! But I also don't like how Capcom gave Leon this much protagonism.
I want to know Grace, I want to play as her, Leon is a cool accesory and all but it's Grace who I care about. Capcom just kept talking about Leon this, Leon that... what about Grace?!
Anyway rant over.
