Just One More Time
(Tell Me You Love Me - Boy Epic )
He made the rules. He broke them. All the time. Today was no exception.
The Rat King walked in the warm jungles of Pandaria, each footstep carefully calculated, as he stepped into the courtyard he once walked in, taking his place as best man in a wedding that never was. The night critters had taken their rightful place around him and even in the darkness, he could see the shifting mist surrounding him. The Shrine of Fellowship was at peace. He walked from corner to corner, as if searching for something.
For her.
He climbed the nearby steps and sat on the very top step. He looked around silently, waiting. It was all in vain. He knew that very well. She could be anywhere in Pandaria. Why would she be in this particular place? He wouldn’t dare go seek out her father’s grave. That place brought back so many horrible memories. The King shook his head and took a deep breath, gazing up at the sky.
It had been a year since she had left the Kingdom with their unborn child. It had been a year since he last kissed her lips and held her in his arms. It had been a year. A very long and painful year.
“Tell me you love me one more time,” he whispered. “I need to hear it…” Tears built up in the eyes of the man who was known to all as cruel, dark, a killer, an imbecile, an idiot with nothing better to do than destroy life. He was vicious to all, except her. She would always call him sweet and angelic. She would dwell in his smile and feel protected in his arms. She would watch over him when he was ill, and calm him when he was raging. She held him in her arms when she knew he was overwhelmed with the Kingdom. He was her angel, her Tianshi, and her demon.
And yet, she wasn’t there.
The raindrops hit his arm and he glanced up again, his tears blending in with the rain that began to fall. He laughed softly. Of course it would rain. Everything was always planned perfectly when it came to her. “Where are you?” he asked softly. He broke his promise of never seeing her again for a small glimpse. He begged and prayed for one more glimpse. One more hug. One more kiss.
But he waited for hours and it never came. “Lily….” he whispered, wiping the tears from his eyes, only to be replaced with more. “I…I miss you.” Burying his face in his hands, he simply let his tears become the rain that fell over him. There simply wasn’t any comfort. There hadn’t been for a whole year. Not with Mora. Not with anyone. No one was Lily, except Lily. She would forever be the Rat Queen. His Rat Queen.
Melaeth rose from the step and walked down to the courtyard. He could hear the ghostly sounds of laughter and celebration for a wedding that never was. For a wedding that she and he would have later, privately. With a sigh, he looked down at the gold ring on his right ring finger. He knew he had married her that day. The engagement ring he gave her was simply to amuse her and let her know that he was serious about them, but on the day that her wedding never was, it really was.
He walked to the center and drew his dagger. Cutting his hand, he let his blood drop onto the stones below. “I was here, Lily,” he whispered as he put the dagger away. He clenched his hand and turned away.
“Just tell me you love me one more time,” he whispered as he walked away. A touch of the black stone earring on his ear and the Flea would be waiting by a tree. Melaeth looked back once more, hoping that maybe, just maybe, she was there.
“I’ll try again next year, my beloved. I miss you both,” he said softly. And with that, the Rat King, Melaeth, walked toward the tree, where the undead said nothing. He cast his portal and they both left those haunting and sacred lands of Pandaria.
