I, along with more than 6,000 got this when we received our conference kits in the recently concluded annual convention of our profession. Folded neatly on my desk, I picked it up with the intent of taking this photo for no reason. But as I gaze at the words, I realized that some 12 years ago, I was obedient enough to enroll in the Accountancy program after a talking to from my parents. I never knew then that as easy as it was to say that I was an accountancy student, the work that came with it was a tall order. I remember being sleep-deprived crying over missing 25 centavos on practice sets or silently scolding myself when I found I had to retake a major. I was happy to sleep for 5 hours on a normal school day, but I was too swamped with schoolwork to get a life on the weekends. Through the years, I learned how to manage the demands, did the things I never thought I could do in a short span of time or function with just a couple of hours sleep and a cup of coffee. My former professor told us in class that we were being trained for bigger things. I didn’t believe him at first, but in more ways I could ever imagine, he has proven his point over snd over. The words in the picture underneath the crown might seem cliche as this type of statement was a fad a few years back, but I’d like to believe this captures the essence of what was instilled in us in school— the calm. The calm amid deadlines, despite the mountain of work, despite being understaff and overworked, despite constantly having to render overtime or being sleepless. We have to be calm to tread through the rough waters of the real world. Being an accountant is no easy feat, and the same is true with other professions, but our job can make or break an organization. So believe us when we say we’ll do it, because we will. And we’ll do it well. Fast forward to this moment, I look at the words again and strangely enough, it makes me smile.
