There’s lots of good cops, but there have also been at least 30,000 cops who have lost their law enforcement certifications for various incidents of misconduct and lapses in ethics, as counted in a recent USA Today investigation. This is likely a very low-ball figure, as there is no public database of police misconduct, though there should be one, shouldn’t there be? Does 30,000 police sound like a lot? Now imagine 30,000 firefighters who got caught starting fires instead of putting them out. Or 30,000 teachers who assaulted their students. That would be wild, and immediately inspire radical reform efforts throughout the entire firefighting and teaching career fields.

Defund the police.
Demilitarize communities.
Remove police from schools.
Free people from prisons and jails.
Repeal laws criminalizing survival.
Invest in community self-governance.
Provide safe housing for everyone.
Invest in care, not cops.
The reforms in that other 8 often suggest things that are already mostly in place, that the police are already ignoring to do what they want. This is abolitionist work.
My main issue with “8 Can’t Wait” is not even how much I despise America and the police. It’s that this isn’t full proof. It’s a plan that supposedly will lead to LESS death. I want NO DEATH. 0. I don’t want to see another person turned into a hashtag. It feels like when slavery was abolished then segregation was introduced. Still traumatizing but at the time I’m sure people said “it’s better than being a slave.” Fuck that. ALL OR NOTHING. The entire system is at fault and it needs to be held accountable. If we switch to another system it’ll just be more trauma under another name. Segregation wasn’t the same as slavery but you think people weren’t seriously damaged after being sprayed with hoses and hunted out of towns?? Bombings of entire neighborhoods. If 8 can’t wait comes to fruition they will find new ways, new codes, new oppression tactics. I don’t want to see that for anyone...
We do not need more martyrs. We need radical change to protect the lives of ALL black people, black men, black women, black trans folk, black gays, black children, black disabled people. What if we integrated fire departments, police departments, EMS, and various social services into one umbrella civic institution to drastically save municipal money pooling resources and expanding cross-training and on-hand human resources? Would it be beneficial to shift some police funding to hire more social workers who can deescalate, counsel and prevent crime rather than just reacting to it with overwhelming force and aggression?
