Forgotten Lady
My god they started season 5 on a subversive one. There's a lot to like here, well acted murderer kills her lovable husband in a vain attempt to continue her career even though she's long past her glory days, and that's how most of the episode operates. Grace is a very good murderer and an even better actress, hiding what she did so well you almost forget she even killed the man to begin with. Co-star Ned Diamond then is the main battle Columbo deals with, and he serves his role very well too - what would've been my favourite scene of the episode was when his patience was running thin with Columbo and yet the man challenges him directly to meet at Grace's place where Columbo will prove everything. "would've been" is the operative phrase though, because the last honestly like 7 or 8 minutes of the episode introduce a twist - one that's immediately obvious in retrospect, but a twist nonetheless - Grace is on her way out and some specific medical memory issues means she no longer even remembers murdering her husband. Yeah "Forgotten Lady" is suddenly a very cruel title! This leads into what isn't a gotcha scene at all, and is instead Ned taking the fall for the woman he loves. Fuck man this got me. I was enjoying the entire episode but we go so dark and do such compelling emotions for that last little bit. Ned's up there now, one of the best characters in the show for this scene alone. First episode where Columbo doesn't arrest the murderer as well, for to see an old lady spend her last few months alive in prison for a crime she doesn't even know she committed would be far too tragic, huh. Yeah, damn. Good one. Also separate from all that Columbo being hounded for not doing his regular gun training and not even having his gun on him ever and eventually bribing another guy to do his test for him is peak.
Edit: motherfucker I'm reading the Columbophile review and got reminded of the fact that Grace wasn't able to remember Columbo's name I'm going to fucking scream god that's so good
